#1 The Hobo - Jay Faulkner

There was a time when he could remember who he was, what his name was, where he was from … or even where he was right now.

That was before ‘they’ realised just what it was that he could do.

That was before ‘they’ got their hands on him.

That was before ‘they’ locked him up, pumped him full of drugs, and tried to bend him to ‘their’ will.

All because of the one thing that makes him different; makes him special.

… his thoughts, his dreams, his imagination all become reality.

Now, somehow – though he doesn’t recall quite how – he has escaped ‘their’ clutches and is on the run, dreaming up bigger, better and mightier creations to form an army of super powered beings to protect him because, no matter what, he won’t go back!

Day 8: Gary the Garlic Breathing Dragon

| November 8, 2010 | 0 Comments

Gary is one of the most lethal dragons in all the lands.  He has the horrific power to breath his garlic breath, which stops people in their tracks.  The only thing that can defeat him is mouthwash, but how do you get close enough to even try to give him a shot?

I’ve had no amount of luck uploading my stuff, so I sort of gave up and just got out the crayons.  I think the rest of the characters are going to be done the same way, crayons and my camera.  So, sorry for the cruddy pics, but nothing’s working for me.

#1 Lady Lightning

| November 8, 2010 | 4 Comments

Lady Lightning - 01Lady Lightning is for a story concept I keep rolling around entitled “Bound”. The reason for this name is because it takes place in a world where Superheroes are not common, but are known about by the general public. It is also fairly common knowledge that though not all normal people have a soul that theirs is linked to, a superhero always has a “soulmate” of sorts that their life is intertwined with. Their “Bond” isn’t nescessarily their romantic interest, nor is it always a particular gender combination. Most never even find who their bond is specifically, which is probably for the best, because if one dies, so does the other. Many villians would use this against heroes, and many ordinary people would fear for their lives constantly if they knew who was on the other end of their life string.

Lady Lightning is a very powerful hero, but she wasn’t always that way. Her sudden increase in power is something she has always wondered about, but tried to push to the back of her mind so she can do her job.

Notes on the design: I was trying to show some kind of a glow to her outfit, like it’s being infused with her energy powers. Like fiber-optic in the mesh or something. I also wanted the outer coat to appear a bit shimmer-metallic, but I didn’t spend too long on this. I know most super-hero stuff leans towards uber-buff people, and excessively busty girls, and as one of the most “powerful” people in the story, I thought of doing this for her, but I came down to a more lithe athletic sort of design for her instead.

#8 Blake Lewis

| November 8, 2010 | 0 Comments

From Lilly’s Blog

Blake Lewis. Self proclaimed “Prodigal Son of Ephton Valley.” Born in 1957 to one of the last farmers in town, he lived in Ephton Valley until age 16. I wanted to learn more about that time of his life but there are no records and people who remember it are generally tight lipped. His parents passed away in the mid-1980’s and his only relative is a sister who lives abroad.

Lewis returned to Ephton in 2006 and built a mansion on his family’s old farm ground (which was protected under a landmark ordinance that he had Mayor Nichol change). He spun it as the return of Ephton’s progidal son; having conquered the financial world on Wall Street he was bringing his fortune and talents to Ephton. He promises a new era of prosperity. He promises a renewed interest in culture, stability for all mom & pop shops and a guarantee for a secure future. All the locals need to do is sign on the dotted line and follow him into this supposedly brave new world.

The truth is quite different. In Ephton Valley, Lewis can be a big fish in a small pond. On Wall Street he was nothing. He made money that by Ephton standards was a fortune. But to his peers he was just a junior partner, never one with the skills or capacity to rise through the ranks. Now this next part is unconfirmed because his employer did a fine job covering it up, but the belief is he was let go over a sexual harassment case. With his tale between his legs, he came scuttling back to Ephton Valley.

Once back here, he was able to begin anew with this story he constructed about wanting to “give back.” Slowly he began taking control of the town by appealing to the absolute worst in people: greed. His takeover has not been hostile by any means. No, he is a conniving bastard.

Almost immediately he began buying local businesses. His promises were simple and extremely attractive: sign your business over to his company, LewisInc, and you get to keep doing your job like you were before. Only now you don’t have to worry about bookkeeping or advertising or even your health benefits and retirement fund thanks to his comprehensive package. Your future is supposedly secure. Except, of course, at the end of the day not one contract I have seen has those promises explicitly in writing.

Let’s make one thing clear: Blake Lewis does not just want your money. He wants your soul. By signing on his dotted line you are trusting your future to a man whose entire return to Ephton Valley has been based on a dirty, filthy lie.

In recent weeks Lewis has become even more aggressive in his attempts to buy the remaining businesses, as well as available real estate. Coupled with the recent visits to his mansion by out-of-town investors, who he has been telling people are just his “old friends from New York,” a scary picture begins to emerge. Alone, Blake Lewis is worthless to his old Wall Street buddies, that much we know. But with the entire town of Ephton Valley as his bargaining chip, he can cash it in to buy into a bigger game. And do you think the people he sells these Ephton Valley contracts to will honor his promises? Do you think he even cares? And why am I the only one asking these questions about him?

I’ll wrap up this series of profiles tomorrow with the article that lead me to leave my job: the story of the crazy boy who inspired me to speak up. The guy known only as Captain Kerplunk.

#7 Monolith #347B

| November 8, 2010 | 0 Comments

Groan....Klank...Whir....

First found on the Northern Shores of the Shield islands these Rusted monoliths gained a bit of fame in the year 231 AR as novelties of an ancient civilization.

Almost a hundred years later, a small village that had grown up around one of the monoliths, burned to the grounds when the monolith suddenly exploded. Many lost their lives and the Queen from that point on declared all of the Monoliths off limits to all peoples of Etherian.

Not almost 300 years after that fateful incident most of the monoliths have been forgotten, or torn apart for scrap. not many know of their existence anymore because of the strict laws against even approaching one.

But on the Spine, at the top of the World on the Shores of Daeni’s lake sits Monolith #347B This monstrosity is larger than most of the other Monoliths and unlike the others who were all rigid, or standing in simple positions this one sits, with his arms crossed on his legs and one could almost say a look of fatigue. As if one day he just stopped.

Out on the Spine the Queen’s laws do not mean much *Much to her dismay* and the Monolith has become a bit of a tourist attraction.

On the eve of the last solstice it is said that from deep within the spine there came a rumbling, as if something was moving the mountain itself. Later that night a strange thing happened. A Piercing whistle screamed across the valley, waking human & beast alike. Confusion about waht was happening set in,  and then  a villager noticed  a strange green glow emanating from the Monoliths shoulder, highlighting some sort of liquid in it’s shoulder, and the ancient steam whistle on it’s back was spewing steam once more…

Chad Welch, Day 8: The Tragedy

The Tragedy

Peter Wellborne, male, Caucasian, 27 years of age; diagnosed with severe autism at the age of 3; Parents Dr. Ira Wellborne, his wife Donna. His father, Dr. Wellborne, is the founder of Wellborne Pharmacuticals. Due to some suspect clerical errors when it came to his will, the future of both his company and son was in question as Peter was integrated into the Foster Care System after a plane crash claimed the lives of Dr. Wellborne and his wife.

Wandering is common to children with ASD* (Autism Spectrum Disorder), often gravitating toward nearby bodies of water. This particular aspect of ASD proved to be very difficult with Peter.

Particularly after he learned to fly.

Shortly after the death of his parents, Peter gained the ability to defy gravity. He apparently went missing from his first foster home in Hartford, Conneticut; and was found two days later in Verona Beach, California.

This manifestation of flight outside of context created more questions than answers. However, more light would soon be shed on the mystery of the boy who could fly.
During one of Peter’s many wandering spells, he was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital in Irvine, California, with two gunshot wounds to the head and chest, and severe internal bleeding from blunt force trauma.

Peter was in a coma for seven years, almost to the day. Even alseep, he was a medical phenomenon. His bruising faded after a few days, and the gunshot wounds seemed to stitch themelves up shortly thereafter.

After the first month, blood work became difficult, as needles began breaking and bending against his skin.

By the second month, blood work was impossible.

The hypothesis was made that Peter generates a biological response to certain stimuli, particularly severe emotional and physical trauma. His biology creates a solution to whatever ails him, unfortunately not until after the initial catalyst has had its full effect. With the horror story of life that Peter has had, he’s quite possibly the most powerful being on the planet, trapped inside his own mind. Is that a defense mechanism too?

#8 The Time Tumor

| November 8, 2010 | 2 Comments

Once a fairly normal brain tumor, life began to change for the Time Tumor when it achieved a crude sentience by accidentaly “hacking” into the the brain of it’s victim. This dim awareness manifested itself as a deep malevolance for it’s host, and caused the accelerated death of the young physicist it inhabited.

Unfortunately, this altered the time stream so that the Grand Unified Theory would not be discovered in time for the advances in technology brought on by this achievement to save humanity from self-destruction.

Now, resurrected by the Univeral Consciousness, the Time Tumor is granted full sentience and sent through time to fix the broken time stream by selectively “pruning” historical figures who held back the advances in science and philosophy necessary to discover the Grand Unified Theory.

The Time Tumor hates the penance it’s forced to make, for though it enjoys inhabiting and destroying its hosts — it is still a relentlessly evil entity and has no desire to undo the damage it originally did.

Yes, I know, but how much are you willing to pay to know too?

Not much is known beyond the name of the man who has the reputation of being able to get you information on anything…for a price.

Elias Loras, has his hands in everything from mob bosses, to the vatican. If you need to know something Elias has known it for at least a month.

He is so sought after by certain agencies that he is very rarely seen in public. this photo snapped of him is almost 20 years old. Elias is said to be based out of New Queensland, but as always his true whereabouts is unknown.

I have only ever known Service.

Minion is a character I came up with may years ago when I was a teenager but never really used. He had been a dservant his entire existence, and suddenly finds himself with no master. He wanders for a while masterless and alone until he finds that he has the power to control others. He does not know how to handle these powers and it drives him mad,

Not the best thought out character but I was in the mood to draw a super type character.

#8 Lt. Cmdr. Finn Killian

| November 8, 2010 | 6 Comments

Okay, so technically the character Finn Killian is actually an homage to the character Alec Killian from Titanium Rain, but he’s also an homage to my good pal Josh Finney who is famous for screaming and ranting quite a lot about anything and everything.

What can I say? I cast my stories according to personality.

Lt. Commander Killian is the right-hand man to Commander Mona Duri. He takes great pleasure in dressing down lower-ranking recruits, particularly if they say something stupid. In fact, the only subordinate who seems to be able to get away with murder under him is Ensign Anders (this might be due to a somewhat misguided crush, though this hasn’t been confirmed). Killian definitely has no problems calling people out on their failings, but this goes for superiors as well. He really, really, really sucks at playing nice for political purposes. Needless to say, his military career isn’t going to go very far.

I’m so going to enjoy drawing this man shouting.

#10 Jonas “Jonesy” Jones

| November 8, 2010 | 0 Comments

Oh, I love it when a joke creates an actual good character.  Jonesy here was a joke between Michelle and me, about how dumb the name Jonesy Jones would sound. And then I decided to make him a time traveller.

Concept: Jonesy Jones is supposed to be a mix of Tom Swift meets Dr. Who.  I’ve been toying with a costume idea for Halloween for an American Dr. Who (I keep calling him the 15th Doctor), and for some reason, I didn’t want to lose the design, so I put it on a kid.

Jonas Jones’ favorite game is Rock Guitar, and he’s very good at it. While playing a song on Expert, Jonesy hits a chord that creates a vibration so intense, it sends him back in time. When he wakes up, he finds himself at Electric Lady Studios…in 1969.  Jonesy is jamming with Jimi Hendrix. He hits the chord backwards, and he goes back to his time. Jonesy comes up with a plan: travel back in time to record his jam sessions with some of the biggest names in music and bring it back the recordings.

Design: Just a kid (12 years old or so) with a fake guitar/guitar controller. You could put just about anything on him and it would work. Since doing the Phantom Shadow, I’m in love with the scarf as accessory (I have at least one more character this week with one). Overall, I like the way this came out. I was going to make him bald, but he kept looking like Little Bill.

Napalm is another member of “Fun Size Justice”. He was the wizkid sidekick of “Armored Avenger”. Tired of inventing better tech that Armored Avenger wouldn’t use just because he was jealous, and only being allowed to fix Armored Avenger’s tech, Napalm joins “Fun Size Justice”.

#8 – Hecate

| November 8, 2010 | 4 Comments

Hecate is the Goddess of the Crossroads. Sometimes associated with Wicca and often visualized as having three heads. I gave her three faces that split open to reveal the next one. In the Mythoscape, she’s basically the witch. Always at her side is the faithful pooch, Broomstick.  Good or Evil, no one really knows. All she cares about is making the deal.

#7 Hosiah the Original Idolater

| November 8, 2010 | 4 Comments

Before showing himself to Moses, Yahweh appeared as burning bush to Hosiah. However, Hosiah had recently uncovered a most pleasing and terrifying idol in the desert. Though the bush cajoled, threatened and pleaded, Hosiah refused to cease his worship of the graven object. In fit of pique, the flaming shrubbery condemned Hosiah to walk the land bearing unspeakably horrible plagues upon all the peoples of the land, though he himself would remain on the earth until the ground was rent asunder in the Final Days.

Hosiah didn’t much care, because he really dug that idol.

Now, she works for those same heroes to repay the debt, this time as the perfect spy.
