This is my final character! I couldn’t think of what to do, so why not make a victorian steampunk terminator mummy? I went nuts with custom brushes in Illustrator on this one. I hope you like it! Iguanabot.com is my illustration blog, deanrivet.com is my site, and I’m on twitter as @rivetrivet. Have a Smurfy day! ^_^

Gynoid, of course, is the technical term for “Fembot.”

The Biomorph

| November 29, 2010 | 0 Comments

This character was inspired by the baby robot that even *I* found disturbing in Daft Punk’s “Technologic” video. This is what I imagine that sweet lil’ baby looks like now. I blew up the head so you can see the stupid teeth I drew. LOOK AT THE TEETH!!!! 😉

The color scheme is intended to create a more bird-like shape. The bird’s “tail” takes the place of what is usually superhero underwear.

“DIE VEGAN DIE” Starring Duke Hasenpfeffer

| November 26, 2010 | 2 Comments

Duke is an action star, you see, and is not terribly bright. I tried explaining that Vegans are not “Communists from the Peoples’ Republic of Vulgaria,” but he wouldn’t listen to me. No Vegans- or bunnies- were harmed in the creation of this cartoon. They may have high blood pressure now though. Duke Hasenpfeffer loves action movies, red meat and hyperbole.

Zonnebrand the lil’ devil

Zonnebrand the lil' devil

“Zonnebrand” is the Dutch word for “Sunburn.” I wanted to name him after something annoying and painful but not too evil since he’s a little impish fellow. 🙂

Smart Phone Goblin

| November 13, 2010 | 0 Comments

I wanted to make a “Kirby-style” monster along the lines of the sci-fi / horror comics of the ’50s, but something current. Atomic energy and space travel were the big themes of their day, so the big deal today is smart phones. I wanted to make a “haunted / possessed phone.”

SILVERBACK

| November 12, 2010 | 2 Comments

I totally came up with the name just before I posted this. I was going to go with Mecharilla or something goofy like that. I made this in Illustrator, so the gradients and shiny goodness was actually a lot easier than it looks. Anyone know where I can buy some steel bananas?

Zodiak Kid!

| November 11, 2010 | 2 Comments

Meet Zodiak Kid! He gets his powers from a mystical luchador mask that lets him summon the powers and/or forms of the zodiac animals by pressing the stars on the mask. I picked the coolest animals from the Western and Chinese zodiacs, leaving out lame ones like Virgins and Acorns and the like. 😛 LOL I just noticed I left off my own sign! XD

This is my spin on the cool Kung-Fu comics of the 1970s. I had to rush this one out, but I’m getting my workflow in Illustrator pretty ironed out.

Meet Automeris- Heroine. Pilot. Flapper Girl.

| November 7, 2010 | 2 Comments

I wanted to create a pulp-styled hero along the lines of The Spirit & The Green Hornet (basically guys in suits wearing masks), but I wanted to add a unique twist. I hope an aeroplane-flying flapper girl is unique enough. At 3.5 hours, this is the most time I’ve spent on a character, not including research. Again, flipped through Wikipedia for inspiration and came across the Io Moth (Automeris Io)

If your coffee doesn’t taste like MUD it wasn’t GROUND this morning!

| November 6, 2010 | 3 Comments

I woke up this morning and was greeted by this oh-so-chipper little coffee monster! I took a picture with my camera phone, and drew him in in Illustrator, but had to bring it back to Photoshop to get the effects I wanted. True to 30 Characters form, what was meant to be a quickie ended up taking way longer than I wanted. I wanted to ask him his name, but he just screamed, broke through my kitchen window and alphabetized my entire neighborhood. Any suggestions? 🙂

TOKAN, despot of Mars

| November 5, 2010 | 0 Comments

Tokan is taken from the names of Alex TOth and Gil KANe. I wanted to do a robot character, and when I drew the face it had a 1950s look to it, so I ran with that. Since he’s a robot I’d blow off one hand so I wouldn’t have to draw it, which gave me the idea to render him as a sort of “Silver-Age Terminator.” Yeah, sure saved a lot of time creating custom Illustrator brushes for the wires, sparks and smoke. *smacks forehead* I hope you like it! 🙂

#1 Shavian Warrior

| November 2, 2010 | 5 Comments

Some funky sci-fi for the people!

I wanted to do something along the lines of Aeon Flux- hence the thong. I was stuck for a gimmick though, so I flipped through Wikipedia until some sort of animal turned up, which was a snail. So I ran with that. I did the background and rough pencils in Photoshop, but I did everything else in Illustrator. I added the Shavian script for some additional sci-fi flair. I hope you like it!
