Though the server time for this challenge is set for “Eastern United States”… I live on the West Coast, so, it was still November 30th when I posted my last (and this) entry, thus successfully completing this years 30 Characters Challenge.  Woohoo!  But if it weren’t for deadlines, nothing would ever get done… am I right?

This year,  I tried to push the “quality” as much as the default quantity.  I wanted each character to match an overall style, and I’d like to think I was quite successful in that, even though I wasn’t entirely sure what that style was gonna be when I started.  There were a lot more animals and creatures this year than I thought there would be.  Was kinda interesting seeing that unfold.  I would also occasionally look back at my entries from 2011, and I must say, I see some growth… which is awesome!

It was a blast seeing some contestants from previous years continuing in the challenge, as well as seeing some new blood, my hats off to all who attempted it.  I’ve got a couple ideas for next years challenge if I participate… but I’ll have to wait til next year to see if I follow through with any of them, or something completely different.

Until then… cheers!

2013 returning challenger: Jay Faulkner

| November 1, 2013 | 0 Comments

Hi all, my name is Jay and this will be my fourth year of attempting the challenge with year one happening in 2010.  The first year was the only time I managed to get close to finishing this thing, with  10 characters sketched and 30 characters ‘created’ in text form only. Year 2 I managed a handful of sketches and last year nothing past the initial planning stage.  Each year I’ve managed to get ill during the event but, this time, I managed to have my ‘near death experience’ early so am hoping that I can get to the end of November without something bad happening …if the zombie apocalypse does happen though, it will probably be my fault 😉

I’m really a writer nowadays, rather than an ‘artist’, and would say that I’m only an enthusiastic sketcher, so nowhere near as good as the majority of the people here (who I am a little in awe of) but I’m really here to have fun and see how close to 30 I can actually get … will aim for the total, of course, and see how things go 🙂

Sup. My name’s Erwin, and I’m pretty stoked to give this challenge another go.

Here’s last year’s entries http://www.30characters.com/2012/12/01/erwin-a-30-characters-in-30-days-2012/ , and I’m hoping I’ll have a completed catalog for this year as well. I’m not sure what the character focus will be for this year. Rather, I’d like to do more than just scan doodles this time around; maybe fool around with coloring in a few pieces.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone elses entries, good luck and have fun everybody.

A photo of me, Robert McKeone

Hello!

I participated in this challenge, for the first time, back in 2011.  I’m proud to say I was successful (barely) in doing so!  I was looking forward to trying again in 2012, but my computer started giving me a LOT of grief and it just wasn’t really possible to use it to deliver the quality I wanted to present.  BUT, got a new computer… and everything is peachy!  So here I go again!

When I’m not participating in this challenge, I occasionally run a sporadically updating webcomic, called appropriately enough, “Waste of Time“.  When I’m ignoring that, I’m slightly more frequently posting to my art blog, “Side Effects May Include Drawsiness“.  When I’m not being artsy, I’m wasting away my years at a dead-end job in a national retail chain known for the ever increasing need to “save you 5%”.

Zombeh

Hey everyone,

The name’s Tim! I’m 23 years old, currently occupying myself with everything art. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to fully engulf myself in art in hopes of one day making a comfortable living off of it.

Last years pieces were all done using the iPad. In fact, nearly 50% of all the work I’ve done throughout the year was created with the iPad because of ease of use, lugging my work with me wherever I go.  I’m not sure what will come of this years challenge, but I’m definitely looking forward to it. Can’t wait to see everyone’s entries, best of luck to all!

2013: Returning Challenger Approaches

| October 29, 2013 | 0 Comments

Returning Challenger Hey Y’all!  I’m back for another month long round of character designs!!!

I’m Chrystle Roth aka theJabberwokk. I am currently 26 years old and going to school now for business administration. I still like drawing sexy women and designing costume. BUT! This past year I join a goofy DeviantArt group that does nothing but draw Sailor Moon characters traditionally.  They offer art challenge s and I have found my new fav thing to do: Design and color the most un-traditional Sailor Scouts ever.  I drew fricken Daft Punk inspired Scouts that had pasties.  PASTIES!  Albeit they were technically bad guys but whatever.

This year, like last year, I am going to use one of those theme challenges for my entries.  This years is the secondary/modified monster list. I am, however, going to do strictly females of various body shapes, sizes and ages.  As much as i know i need to improve on my male forms, with working retail (still), I know i need to be able to get off work and draw a form that I KNOW I can modify to be unique, without worrying about whether or not the downstairs anatomy even makes sense.

Here’s wishing everyone luck!!!

hello everybody in the cyber world. I had to drop out last year because I had computer issues but I’m going to be OK this year.  I can’t wait to get going and create some new crazy stuff. I usually have a theme for the contest  but I’m not going to have one this year. I’m going to have fun and go crazy with it.

30 Characters: Culminating Post

| December 1, 2012 | 1 Comment

So, I’m writing this a little bit ahead of time because I’ll be at work for most of my day tomorrow (12/1), but on the east coast, it’s already 12/1, so….hah! The challenge is over and I’m really proud to have taken part this year. By no means was I the best participant nor does my work measure up to some of the beautiful pieces I’ve seen on the site, but I did it for myself. Sketching/drawing is something I’ve done since I was a kid and have always taken the time to do it when time allowed. A lot of myself went into my sketches/drawings, and I found 3o Characters challenged me in a way that was beneficial for various reasons. For one, it helped take my mind off other things that were sort of dragging me down and that felt more like a weight on my shoulders than anything. I felt I needed to step away from writing for a good while and allow myself to think differently. My days were filled with heart-break, loneliness, and introversion up until 11/1.

My days had suddenly become about being observant of people’s characteristics and facial features. I began to think about what my characters would look like in appearance, who to base them on, and how to frame the compositions. All but 2 were done digitally via my iPad mini and the ArtStudio app, but it felt like the most practical way to go about this venture. For one, I could take it with me anywhere and it wouldn’t be horribly cumbersome. In fact, I whipped out my iPad many times while on break at work (which had become time consuming) and began sketching and doodling to get a general idea of what the finished piece would look like. Then, I’d head home and really get to work on the drawing of the day.

Now that it’s over, I’m sort of sad to not have this particular deadline anymore. I have a few other new deadlines to meet (that I’ve set for myself) in regards to my writing, but this was something unique and I’m glad to have taken part in it. I’m also going to say that participating in the 30 Characters challenge has given me a renewed sense of vigor and have already begun applying myself in my next venture(s): writing reviews for a local music site I’ve become a part of, short stories, and poetry that I intend to send off to thedirtynapkin.com. As per Tyler James’ request, here’s the link to my author page which includes all my drawings (just copy & paste or click on my name), and thank you for the experience Mr. James & Comix Tribe!:

Sea Humonster, Mane Wyvern. When a mutated octopus slid it’s way into Mane’s cranium, it grew… more ways than one. It became him. During the final moments of Mane’s consciousness  the mutant assumed control and burst it’s tentacles out.  Some people who knew him could still see his facial features remain in the newly sculpted concoction.

Sup. I’ve been lurking on the challenge for a couple years now, figured why not give it a shot this time around.

My name’s Erwin. I’m 24 years young, from California. I’ll be doodling out characters for a few D&D campaigns I’m playing in, a bunch of which are logged over at http://www.obsidianportal.com. I’ll probably link up the individual things in their posts when I get to it.

I enjoy photography, particularly messing around with dslr’s. And Law & Order: SVU. That’s about it.

Heya eveyone!

I am new here my name is Britney Winn but, my pen name is Buritsu. I am a recent college graduate from Wisconsin and currently aspire to become a webcomic artist . . . one day. I found this event last year but by the time I got to it, it was Christmas time so I’m here now! Yay! The stuff you will see from me will be characters I had in my head for (hopefully) future comic projects I wish to do before the Grim Reaper comes knocking at my door. Genre will range from fantasy, sci-fi and whatever else. I look forward to posting and seeing what fellow participants will come up with. Good Luck Everyone!

2012 Challenger: Trancedeliquist

Ehm…well, hello from Athens. Yup, that one from the small country called Greece. 😛

First time here, hoping to an artistic bloom. Or boom. Time will show. ^^

As long as the characters are considered…well. I’m going to resurrect my first comic called Indiana Lega. A mixture of Spider-Man & Indiana Jones, Lego-style. But let’s call it a more anatomically correct remake. 🙂

The Challenge has been posted in GreekComics forum too:

The name is Jaclyn and this will be my second year doing the 30 characters challenge. I recently started up at VFS for 3D animation and visual effects (yeah lasts years hopes for art school toatally came true. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get any character sculpts in this year seeing as I just started with the sofware but I will attempt my 2D characters just as I did last year. Hopefully I will find the time to get this year done. I found last year was a fantastic way to improve my art and come up with ideas on the spot.

My dA is here where more works in progress and sketches can be found on my tumblr here although it is not as full of art as I orginally intened it to be.
