#7 – Ricky the Ranger

| November 9, 2010 | 0 Comments

Another student of the Windsoar Academy. Ricky, or “Rickety” as he’s more commonly known, is training to be a ranger. He’s quite a marksman, believe it or not, but he’s just so darn nervous all the time! He could be the next Robin Hood, if he would just calm down a little…

#9 The Lie…

| November 9, 2010 | 1 Comment

The lie has no body. The lie is just a voice. He whispers into people’s ears, making his voice seem to be their own inner thoughts. The Lie has been known to control hundreds of people over the course of their entire lives. The only way to resist the lie is to realize he is not your own thoughts, but another entity entirely, and ignore him. He will eventually move on to a more susceptible person.

You need mushrooms? Osh is your guy! This little forest imp knows all there is to know about mushrooms. All sorts, shapes, and sizes. Making a stew? Try the Lowland Brown! Brewing some poison? A Violet Fissure is all you need! Just looking for a good time? Well sir/ma’am, he’s got those, too!

Might Mutt is yet another member of “Fun Size Justice”. He was once the faithful companion of Mr. Mighty, strongest man on earth. After several years working together, Mighty Mutt got tired of still living in a dog house and eating plain old dog food, despite the fact he was more intelligent than the average human being, and 10 times as strong. Now Mighty Mutt is the merciless field leader of “Fun Size Justice”.

I shall Rule them all.

The Storytellers – Part 1 Elusius

Elusius the Mad was storyteller between 435 -472 P.R. (Post Rhiannon). A human from the spine, Elusius was chosen because he led his village to victory over an evil Allasian Monarch who set his Golems upon the Valley. Chosen by Etheria to become the fourth human Storyteller Elusius showed signs of trouble from the moment of his transformation. He immediately declared his Lordship over the valley in which he lived * An act of Treason according to the Act of Thorns, a Treaty signed between all Countries after the Death of Rhiannon in 0 P.R. *

He then chose to build an army. *This too as an act of Treason.*

The Council of Thorns was content to let the mad man rave in his valley as long as he did not leave the valley and cause trouble for the greater citizenry of Daeneris.

In 470 Elusius decided that he wanted to no longer chafe under the restrictions of the Council Marched on Queens Landing.

After Razing the country for two years on his way to the city gates of Queens Landing, his army was met by the combined forces of the Council’s independent armies. The battle raged for almost a week, The ragtag army of Elusius was hardly a match for the Trained armies of Elves,Dwarves, Humans, & Kitha’ari.

As the sun rose on what would become the last say of Elusius Short Mad life, the gates of the city opened onto the planes and out walked the Slayers. These chosen warriors were given the power to resist the magics of the Storytellers and the ability to end their existense.

Elusius all but alone on the field ran.

He did not make it far.

“The lands of Oberonn are cursed. I have seen water running a deathly green in the northern holds. I have smelt the death, a carrion stink, and charnel ash that wafts on the winds from the Greendale. The valleys in the Cruth shudder and moan, wreathed in anathemic rose light, and the sky weeps tears of blue fire. Sorcery is sundered, and the Weave is rent. Gods have fallen, archmagi have gone mad, and the idols that represented both, that take in the love for the represented, are grown full of hellish resent… “

Meet Kurt The Nuclear Man

He is a huge comic book fan and he’s coming to the next San Diego Comic Con in 2011.

#11 Lady Deathshot

| November 9, 2010 | 0 Comments

I take no responsibility for this, but I love the way it came out.

Michelle, my wife, is a nurse. Has been for a long time. So, when I started the Challenge, I would draw out basic sketches, trying to just get the jist of my characters on paper. Michelle, since we’ve been together, has become a huge comic fan (mostly of Batgirl) and I guess she saw me sketching and decided to sketch out Lady Deathshot (see below). When I started using Hero Machine, she jumped on and rendered LD. And did a bang up job, if I say so myself. Very proud of my wife, who has become a co-creator with the publishing of this character.

Lady Deathshot

Concept: Elle Driver from Kill Bill without the ninja training meets Dr. Killinger from the Venture Bros. Lady Deathshot (Victoria Frost) is a nurse who works on the side of the devils. She’s out to maim, kill, and destroy, not heal.

Design: The killer Florence Nightingale. She has syringes full of different poisons and a bag full of bad intentions

Seriously, I’m so impressed with my wife, it’s ridiculous.

#8: The Candy Apple Man

| November 9, 2010 | 0 Comments

I’ll be throwing up two entries today, the first of which is courtesy of my girlfriend Stephanie, as discussed over steaming hot (and delicious) soup, amidst a round of air humping. While normally I’d argue that killers without motive are far more terrifying, killers out for sympathetic vengeance are undeniably fun. Please leave a comment or three, and thanks for reading!

December, 1922.

It feels like just yesterday I was standing at the gates of the Central Park Zoo, standing like a baffoon with my hands full of candied apples and my voice echoing over the heads of the patrons. Parents who had brought their spoiled little brats to ogle the giraffes and orangutans, sitting in their own shit, boring themselves to death. Still, a man has to make an honest living. Mama showed me how to make candied apples when I was a boy, after Pa died, to try and ease the loss. I figured I could come to the big city and make a buck.

I never expected to meet Patricia. Meeting her shaped who I am today, whether that’s a good thing or bad I’ll leave for you to decide. She worked as the trainer for Hattie, the smartest elephant in the world. Every day, she’d finish her nightly routines with the beast and then stroll out the gates, happy as a clam. I envied how much joy she took from her work, especially inside a zoo that was run by men. It couldn’t have been easy for her to step all over the machismo of the brutes, taking the credit for the success of Hattie. I guess that’s probably why what happened, happened.

Folks’d come from all over the States to see Hattie perform. Patricia was responsible for all of it. She’d explained the story to me at one time, about her father’s trip to Ceylon and how he’d acquired the beast. She’d demanded to stay with Hattie when she was sold to Bill Snyder in ‘03. Of course Snyder, the rat, took all the credit for Patty’s work, and his employees followed suit. Anyhow, every day she’d walk past my apple cart flashing those big green eyes, and I finally mustered the courage to ask her out one evening. As my luck would have it, she accepted and before you knew it, we were engaged to be wed.

Boys will be boys, of course, and the news of our engagement spread throughout the zoo like wildfire in the West. Being one of ‘em, I can still never understand how a man can elevate himself above a woman but always feel like he’s got to fight for her affection. Long story short, the boys were jealous. First Patty had taken their spotlight, and now I had taken Patty. They even went so far as to put some sort of African dung in my candy brew and made the few customers I had sick as dogs. Flubbing with me was fine, but it’s what they did to Patricia that I can’t stand.

As a prank one evening a couple of months ago, they scared the holy Hell out of some of the elephants, just as Patty had finished her nightly routine with Hattie. Leaving the pen, she was trampled. Flattened like Mama’s flapjacks. Outside the walls, I barely even heard the scream. The sun went down and as old Bill Snyder came out, locking the gates, I knew something wasn’t right. He didn’t acknowledge me at all. I jumped the fence that night, and I can’t rightly recount what it is I found, as the pieces were indistinguishable from the woman I loved.

Not long after, just last month in fact, Hattie passed. The animal doctors said it was an unidentifiable illness, but I know what it was. Hattie had been with Patricia since she first arrived in the States. Living without her wasn’t manageable.

For a while there, I had considered layin’ right down next to the beast and dying myself. My wife, my love, gone, with no due justice. Bein’ a candy apple vendor isn’t exactly a respected profession; the NYPD wouldn’t give me a second glance, especially not up against a local entrepreneur like Bill Snyder. The zoo brought in thousands of tourists every summer. It was naive to think that a citizen would take precedence over the Chamber of Commerce. Realizing the futility of my case, I’m bringing matters into my own hands. I got one thing at my disposal after all, and that’s making the best damn candied apples on the island of Manhattan. But as business must, it’s got to evolve. Revolutionize. I’ve got a new recipe that’s been a hit in this dirty city.

I can’t bring back my wife, but I can make the children of her killers eat their Daddy’s hearts.

Chad Welch, Day 9: Sarah Kelly, The Storyteller

| November 9, 2010 | 4 Comments

Sarah Kelly is the girl next door; a cute, semi-nerdy part-time librarian that devours books of all subjects at an alarming rate. Coming from a family of high standing, full of doctors, lawyers and the like, Sarah just wants to write the Great American Novel and live a happy, simple, romantic life with the man of her dreams, whoever that may be.

While doing inventory on some of the older books in the Avalon Hills Library, Sarah came across a seemingly harmless leatherbound tome, it’s interior pages blank. Little did she know that she was in possession of The Book of Gon, The Storyteller, whose pages are filled by the posessors imagination, transcribing the thoughts of the wielder with interesting results. With sufficient passion for the story, the book tends to make the characters within a reality for a short amount of time.

Which proves both a blessing and curse for this ordinary girl with an amazing imagination.

#6 Jaidee “The Machine”

| November 9, 2010 | 2 Comments

A Muay Thai Prodigy, Jaidee was a star on the rise. Not only in the Martial Arts world, but nationally, as a pop icon even in her native Thailand as well. By the time she was ready to start high school, she was the star of three blockbuster films & preparing to release her debut album. That was until a plane crash during a press junket in Hong Kong. Jaidee survived, but just barely. Still her celebrity was mourned all the same, because as a result of her injuries, her left arm & both legs required amputation.

That was until a generous donation from the Korean firm Ohdaesu Motors. She was offered to be the first to try out their new line of highly functional, top of the line prosthetic limbs.

The “adaptation” stage was expected to be slow & arduous. Rejection was always a possibility. But muscle memory took over & upon her first test, Jaidee was able to complete three hours worth of Muay Thai routines with more accuracy & more grace than she was ever capable of before. In other words, she didn’t need to take to them. It was like she was upgraded.

Banned from competition for obvious reasons, she devoted herself to her films. Now she is the world’s first cyborg action star. This high profile distinction has even caught Hollywood’s attention.

The main idea in mind here was fighting game character rather than a comics character I guess. Not too in love with the get up I ended up giving her, but the clothes I had in mind would have covered up the cybernetic seams & then what would’ve been the point? On the war path to catching up! Imma do it, dammit!!

Randy is a long forgotten king, betrayed by his best friend, and abandoned in a desert. Funny is they left him with a sword to defend himself, but this same sword would only serve for toothpicks to the blue dragons surrounding the area.

Also, hi! It’s my first post, hoping to catch up till it’s all over.

#9 Orion

| November 9, 2010 | 3 Comments

Jonathan Demitry’s mother used to tell him he was one in a million. Turns out he was much rarer than that…

Of the five-hundred quadrillion sentient beings in Sector 2715, the relatively small portion of the known universe containing Earth and 40 other planets hosting intelligent life, Jonathan was chosen to be the next member of “The Protectorate.”

“The Protectorate” is an inter-dimensional peacekeeping force responsible for maintaining law and order throughout the universe. 5000 in number, each member of the protectorate is given belt that grants him extraodinary powers and long life. Quagdron the Brave, a Kruelian, was the most recent member of the Protectorate guarding Sector 2715. His last act was to pass on the belt, called “Orion’s Belt” by earthlings, to Jonathan, who was chosen for his pure heart and unquenchable spirit, to continue his legacy as a member of The Protectorate.

However, it’s not Jonathon Demitry who is wearing Orion’s Belt. It is his identical twin, Joseph, who stole the belt from his brother and all the power that goes with it. Though genetically identical, the estranged brothers couldn’t be more dissimilar. While up until this point, Joseph Demitry has equipped himself well as this sector’s Protectorate, it remains to be seen whether the power will corrupt him.

ORION is one of the characters at the center of a graphic novel I’m itching to start working on. High concept, it’s Agatha Christie’s “Ten Little Indians” meets The Justice League. Essentially, it’s a superhero murder mystery, darker and more mature than some of the other stuff I’ve done. I’ll be looking for artist to co-create this project sometime next year.

Going for the Green Lantern archetype, but with a bit of a twist.

#9 Ensign “BooBoo” Chavez

| November 9, 2010 | 0 Comments

And now for the male fighters of Valkyrie. Oddly, we start with the least manliest of the Odin Squadron 4, the male answer to the female Valkyries: Booboo Chavez.

Like Adia, Booboo is the resident science officer of his team, though he’s more of a signals engineer than an academic researcher. He is given his silly nickname for his rather melodramatic antics. He usually gets into flagrant fights with his father, a high-ranking officer at another space station, and nine times out of ten, he’s the guy on the team who’d throw up his hands in a combat situation and shout “We’re gonna die!” Yeah, he’s that guy.

He really wouldn’t even be in any Odin squadron if it wasn’t for his father, Admiral Chavez, the leader of the entire Space Forces. Booboo doesn’t get along with his father, who would love nothing more than to transform him into a military badass and make him follow in his footsteps. Booboo would rather be ANYWHERE but a battlefield, but he can’t seem to escape the stranglehold influence of his father. He was paired with his fellow Odin squad team members to man him up, but he’s pretty resistant to the idea if only to spite his old man.

#9 – Vulcan

| November 9, 2010 | 4 Comments

Vulcan is a God of craftsmen and fire, specifically, metal working. In the Mythoscape, that makes him the Blacksmith. He’s one of three gods who refuse to snap their fingers to get what they want (mostly). With Hephaestus and Ptah, Vulcan formed the 3 Gods Construction Company. These guys love to get their hands dirty and value hard work above all else. Goes without saying, they’re not gonna like Roland.

#7 Lord Gorn Dance

| November 9, 2010 | 14 Comments

Commander of the Northern Host, Lord Gorn Dance is one of the most feared Fae in the known realm. Where his war banner flies, armies tremble. Considered the greatest warrior to live by most historians, Lord Gorn was originally the commander of the wild Faerie Host of the Western dominance. That Host, having no ruling body to govern them, were considered the scavengers of the realm until Princess Lorne sought an audience with Lord Gorn, then known as the Fae, Gorn Dance. He brought with him his armies when he agreed to rebuild the Northern Host, and the Princess named him her champion and commander of the Dominance’s armies and granted him a Lordship.

Lord Gorn is a pure Fae, meaning he has never known subjegation by the High Folk, and as such regards them as equals on all levels. Since coming to Hold, he has made intentions towards the Princess’s whisperer Chondra Flicker. Having a Faerie’s wild heart, he would stop at nothing to win her affections…

#8 Corpse-Trio

| November 9, 2010 | 0 Comments

Circus performers and freaks are a hard won commodity in these modern times. One circus looking to take advantage of modern medicine and no governing laws in its sovereign nation decided to take the freak/performer show to the next level. In a truly Frankenstein approach they’ve brought out, Corpse-Trio. Three formerly terminal cancer patients who’ve opted to have most of their body removed and share what is left with their now closest friends.

Todd Svar The Strong Man.

Dod Everette The Sword Swallower.

Rod Salvatore The Clown.

All was fine till the day another nation decided to take over their homeland, thus ending their Gypsy life styles. Now Todd, Dod, and Rod have joined the resistance and fight as Corpse-Trio.

(I swear I didn’t have any drugs today)

07 南女

Kooriyh • Snows of the south

Kooriyh is the most potent of the Four Snows, and is the aspect which “smothers in one’s sleep.” That she governs the south means she is the stillness that comes up from behind. She is often seen by people who die of melancholia and hypothermia, as she points the way » to the Parade. Her most uniform form is a watery mist, although she often has the appearance of a grey-skinned, sullen young girl, with fuda » hanging from twin onyx horns to keep her shape through the Layers.

The 雪 on her forehead allows her to communicate with the other three Snows. The pattern on her kimono is of swirling waters, and she is a very close friend to Makktanh »

#3 – The Lancer of Luck

| November 9, 2010 | 0 Comments

The Lancer is a counterpoint to my already-established character, The Archer of Discord. While The Archer serves (to an extent, at any rate) the powers of Discord and Eris, The Lancer is similarly bound to the personification of Luck, often known only as “The Lady”.

Once a talented jouster who served in world-wide competitions representing the human kingdom of Redshirtia in the elven realm of Avalon Vale, The Lancer was considered to be undefeatable by most opponents. He fought, in jousts, all takers of all races, sized, and experience levels, defeating kings and goblins and time-travelling robots from the future with the same degree of capacity and restraint.

The Lancer was bound by honor and duty, and served the code of the knight (without technically being a knight) and also fought in real battles, often to improve his skill in official jousting. Legend has it that once he managed to stack up three enemies on his nearly indestructible alloy lance, and would have had more but further foes kept falling off the end.

His undefeated streak ended at the same moment his fealty to Luck began. In keeping with his vow to take any challengers, he accepted a gauntlet across the face from a large and burly knight from a nearby kingdom who he had defeated previously and did not consider to be a serious threat. During the joust, a small girl in the crowd accidentally let go of a cat; the cat pounced at a mouse, which scurried up a woman’s skirt, causing the woman to panic, throwing her mug of ale into the air, landing in a coop full of chickens, sending them into a flury, causing the one chicken still amongst them capable of flight to launch from the cage and nearly claw the Lancer’s eye out. He was then defeated by the other knight.

After the joust ended, considering the events, he realized that it was not truly the knight who had defeated him – it was luck. Bad luck. Upon finding the girl who had released the cat and confronting her, she transformed before his eyes into The Lady, confirming his suspicions, and at that moment he pledged to serve her until he was defeated again.

#6 Yosuzume

06 よすずめ

Pa’halih • The changer

Small but formidable, the clicking of her demon hands often heralding her approach, Pa’halih is often remembered by new Walkers as their Parade dresser, she-who-unskins. Alongside the Junior Director » she is the First Department Chief’s other trusted aide, who ensures that all who join the Parade are properly dressed.

Pa’halih doesn’t talk but makes short, crying sounds like a bird of prey. Like a runway stylist harried before a big show, she is ruthless when it comes to perfection, and strips away what little mortal membrane some Walkers still carry on them, whether by accident or by secret: a memory from the 24421st second of their life, the smell of an old bed, a word that summons a lover.

They say the ‘horn’ on her head is actually a beak, and Pa’halih’s humanoid form is not as stable as most may think, which is why she rarely travels the World Layers unlike her colleagues and boss; this may also explain he lack of fuda » she has on her.

——————————————————-

for Cbm.

The Yosuzume is a traditional Japanese demon that resembles a bird. Very loosely did I base Pa’halih on this, merging it with various mythological aspects of women taking on half-bird forms. That, and the obvious Pahaliah » who is an angel of conversion. Ideally, one cannot fully join the Parade unless one is divested entirely of mortal constraints, and Pa’halih is there to do the job.

#8 – King Beatforge

| November 9, 2010 | 0 Comments

King Beatforge is a new character in the world and story of Art Geek Zoo: The Way of Sound.

King Beatforge is a gholhem (a race from the world of Musica) who never connected with a mystical instrument. He discovered he indeed had the talent to be a powerful drummer, perhaps enough so to become a master of the Way of Sound. He found he had stronger interests elsewhere when he discovered he could heal and modify mystical instruments. This led to his discovery of how to create gholhem and instrument familiars (sentient amps, guitar pedals, and other band supporting equipment).

King Beatforge held a position of high honor among mystical instrument society making his creations for all of Musica and the celestial beings that Musica serves. While a drummer at heart, King Beatforge carried a powerful enchanted (but not sentient) woodwind all-purpose crafting instrument.

King Beatforge always enjoyed creating items – most of all to serve Musica and he tolerated the tributes and gifts he had to build for the celestial beings Musica served. Often, while creating items and entities he would assemble an audience and make a performance of the art. He could dazzle crowds while creating rhythms out of items in his workshop and still crafting materials together in his instrument furnace. He could pack a few hundred gholhems and mystical instruments in his workshop and dazzle, entertain, and inspire them for hours.

King Beatforge went missing during the world shattering battle now known as “The Fall of Chromarch” where much of Musica was torn apart. Much of it was destroyed when part of Musica fell to Terra.

#5 Bellerophon the Atomic Space Ape

| November 9, 2010 | 8 Comments

A “necessary casualty of progress” is what they called him. The space race was on after all. So after a bit of “training,” they dressed him up in a fancy little suit & strapped him into the center of a rocket. He hardly knew any better. He assumed he’d be getting a banana for his troubles. Then came launch. The noise, the vibration, the chaos. It was all a bit much. Then the floating. That wasn’t so bad. But it went on for a while. Then came the light.

You see, they fired his capsule right into the path of a gamma ray burst. Just to see what would happen. The result? One spurned space Simian hopped up on all sorts of cosmic radiation. After a long, cold trip to the outer reaches of our solar system & around again, he’s back, & livid. NASA never prepared for this contingency. Who can stop this monkey menace?
