"Youse want we should bump him off?"

Hired gun/knife and various other weaponry in employment of one Mr. Ferrone.

Last one for the 1940’s theme. I didn’t reach all of my goals, but I’m pretty satisfied with what I’ve accomplished so far in the 30 characters challenge. Just 20 more to go!

"I'll take care of it."

Adalade Jenkins is Mr. Ferrone’s personal assistant. In addition to outstanding secretarial skills and balancing the loan books, she also cleans up any situations that have become a bit… messy and is very good at tying up loose ends.

Play it baby!

That clarinet player that Bobbi’s got her shy eye on.  He has a habit of getting in debt and then he has to deal with unscrupulous characters.

Otka is the Hertz’s beloved Valais Black-Faced Sheep. She acts as guard dog for The Golden Cat Club, but is often mistaken for a throw rug when napping.

#06 Louis “The Noose” Ferrone

Doesn’t take a genius to know you shouldn’t borrow money from this character, but desperate times call for desperate actions, and when you’re that desperate, Louis’ll have your back… until it’s time to pay it back… then you might just find a knife in your back…

Have you lost weight? Don't worry, we'll fix that.

Married to Papa Hertz, Mama Hertz has a special table she was saving just for you. That’s the kind of sweet old lady she is. She’ll want you to bundle up so you don’t catch a chill, eat a lot so you’ll grow big and strong, get married, and have lots of babies.

Why does she wear Victorian style dresses in the 1940’s setting? … I dunno, just felt like she should.

Suck it in, girl.

Not a lot of the performers like Marge’s abrupt attitude when it comes to dressing and costuming, but she’s known to work fitting miracles and has never had a performer late to stage on account of wardrobe.

Rumor has it, one of the chorus line girls split an embarrassing seam running along her… lower-lower back *cough* and Marge mended it from behind the stage curtain in 1 minute 27 seconds flat before the girl had to show her back side to the audience during the dance.

She’s just that good.

DISASTER! It's the end of the world as we know it!

Leroy, esteemed newspaper salesman. He reads about so much bad news in the papers he sells, that he’s become quite paranoid.

Grandpapa's Suspender Still Have That Somethin'-Somethin'

My first set of 10 characters are going to be set in America’s late 30′s/early 40′s time period. Lots of Swing music, art deco, greasy spoon diners, ritzy night clubs, gangsters, that kind of awesome stuff.

Bobbi’s boss, the owner of The Golden Cat Club. He insists that everyone call him “Papa Hertz” claiming he’s older than all of them anyway. An immigrant from Switzerland, he’s always seen wearing his grandfather’s suspenders as a lucky charm. (Mrs. Hertz says he even sleeps with them on.)

Papa Hertz treats his staff well (as long as they follow the rules) and pays them fairly. Morale among the staff is generally high in accordance with his jovial attitude and grandfatherly presence, but he has no tolerance for troublemakers or shenanigans within his establishment.

This is the female protagonist. In comparison to the flashy show girls, she’s the meek mouse, overlooked and unappreciated  Coat Check Girl, Bobbi Lorrel, of The Golden Cat Club.

Tired of watching her life pass by one coat at a time, she craves a little excitement, or at very least that the clarinet player would ask her out for coffee sometime.

30 Characters Challenger: Betsy Luntao

| October 26, 2010 | 6 Comments

Hey there! I’m Betsy, a twenty-something freelance artist currently living in central California. Betsy Luntao - 30 Characters Challenger!

Being raised on Disney movies, and loving to draw more than anything, I decided pretty early on I wanted to draw for a living.

Although my sights are set to work in the feature animation industry, I do have a love for the comic book storytelling medium. I’m working on an Old West set comic with my boyfriend, a Sci-Fi genre comic which takes place underwater, and have recently been recruited to work as illustrator for Children’s books.

I have a lot of projects up in the air which hasn’t left me with a lot of time to develop my Character Design portfolio. Once I heard about the 30 Characters Challenge on Facebook, I knew I wanted to participate and get that push that I’d need to get back to character design.

I’ve set up some guidelines for myself to keep me a little more on track with the challenge:

  • I will be drawing 3 sets of 10 characters. Each set will be of one theme or “universe”
  • Each set will include 5 males, 5 females, at least 2 seniors, at least 2 children, at least 2 turn around model sheets
  • Each character will include at least one prop/weapon
  • Each set will include at least 1 backdrop or environment
  • Each set will include at least 1 protagonist and 1 antagonist

Unfortunately, I already have a vacation scheduled for the 13th – 17th of November and will have to either post those early or late, but otherwise I hope to keep on track with a character per day.

Other than drawing, I love training in Aikido, a non-violent martial art. Being an artist, keeping my hands in working order is a high priority, so I wasn’t about to train in anything that had me chopping, striking or punching. Aikido relies on physics and using one’s body weight and gravity to throw an attacker, so it was perfect for me. Plus I’m a gentle soul and don’t really want to beat up people.

I also looooove dancing!! I’ve recently started taking Swing Dancing lessons with my boyfriend, and it’s easily my favorite way to spend a Friday night.

My love for movement, fluidity and storytelling shows up in my art work as qualities of being gestural and filled with emotion rather than being precise and awe inspiring.

I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s posts for this challenge!!
