#1: The Atomic Marine

| November 1, 2011 | 0 Comments

Ralph Gordon Blake, or “The Atomic Marine”, as he likes to call himself, is an 18 year old goofball who claims that he is some sort of “space marine” whose mission is to hunt and take down “an invading horde”, despite the fact that there is no invading horde, and that he is in present day Earth.  However, he is too stubborn to realize this and continues his pointless crusade against the imaginary horde, which happens to be completely normal criminals in reality.

At a young age, after watching a movie with space marines fighting aliens in it, Ralph vowed that one day, he would become the best space marine he could ever be when he grows up.  While it didn’t turn him into a bully, he did, however, begin donning a fake armor plate, magenta pants, and military boots when he turned 16.  Two years after that, he decided that he would now start going after what he believes is an invading horde, without realizing that he is nothing more than a really goofy vigilante.

Generally, Ralph is a nice guy, but he is just a goofball.  He doesn’t like being reminded about the fact that he isn’t really a space marine, and that the invading horde is nothing more than a figment of his imagination.

Not to mention he’s armed with a fake pistol that doesn’t even fire any kind of ammunition…

Day 1: Carrie Luxure

| November 1, 2011 | 0 Comments

Here is Carrie Luxure! She is for my series called “Engarde! with Perri and Thrust”. She is a white cat and she works at the same workplace as Perri Engarde and Ergo Dane. She’s one rank under Ergo on the staff. Carrie has an obsessive crush on Ergo, but it’s VERY unlikely he’ll ever notice, let alone return these feelings. ‘Luxure’ is French for ‘Lust’ because Carrie constantly lusts after Ergo Dane.

#1 the J-Man

| November 1, 2011 | 0 Comments

A late entry, but I’m in the Pacific Time Zone so suck it.  Full disclosure, this may not technically be a “new” character, heck, he’s not even that original.  His design is pretty  simple, I just look into the full body length mirror i keep next to my drawing table, tone down some of my more impressive features (like my even more defined jaw structure, slightly larger lats and bis, smile dimples, etc.), then add a sweet cape, sketch in some extra chest and shoulder hair, put a sock over the left hand because I apparently cant draw an inside profile of a fist (I learned that the hard way) and VOILA! you the J-Man, earth’s most dapper, sophisticated, charming, fun to be around and gosh darn handsome super hero!

Prose

A flash of lightning illuminates the windows of a police car off the side of a rural Kentucky highway. A young man, no more than 26 years old, shovels french fries into his mouth. Pausing to take a slurp from a vanilla milkshake the man winces and put his left hand up to his temple, massaging it slowly he lets out a sigh. The resounding boom of the thunder rumbles over the landscape causing the man to glance up slightly as if he can see the sound waves.

‘Well shit, looks like rain,’ the man breathes out, rolling his leftover wrappers up into a ball. With a slight shift he tosses the ball into the empty fast food bag .

Suddenly a very odd looking car streaks by his cruiser causing him to jerk back slightly. Almost as if it was within one motion he jerks his right arm out to throw the squad car into drive and pushes the accelerator to the floor. Dirt, rocks and mud spew out from behind the cruiser as it rockets onto the highway and off in the direction of the vehicle. Minutes pass but the officer notices that he’s barely bridging the gap between the two. With a ‘Tch’ sound he tries to push more out of the engine with little success. Another flash of lightning brightens the cab as he reaches out with his right hand to grab the radio. Shortly after there’s another flash, then another followed by one more except the familiar sound of thunder never comes.

‘Never seen lightnin do that before,’ he muses curiously as he begins to radio in the speeding car.

‘Dispatch this is Cadet 01987, I’ve got a 505A on route 119. Requesting backup, over.’

‘Officer 01492 will respond,’ the radio crackles with the response.

Throughout this the lightning seems to continue, getting more rapid. The cadet blinks a few times, scrunching his face up in annoyance and just like that everything goes white. Slowly the light begins to recede and color begins to return to his sight.

‘What the…hell?’

As the image before him sharpens from blurry to crisp he blinks a few times in shock. Exotic fauna, strange sounds and an odd sound surround the young man as he slowly pulls himself out of the vehicle. A sharp screech from above catches his attention, jerking his head upwards his eyes widen in shock.

‘Dear god in heaven I’m either dead or that’s a friggin pterodactyl.’

(I was creating a lovely colored and better formatted version of this and then photoshop crashed and I lost most of it. After raging, I decided to at least post my line work in case I am unable to finish the colored version in time)

Anyway Hi!

This is Sierra, a 15 year old dream hunter. She lives in a world that uses dreams as energy, so she goes out in the middle of the night and collects dreams which, in this story, manifest themselves into spheres after the dreamer leaves the REM cycle of sleep (when you usually dream).

Sierra is a tomboy at heart and her hair is in a constant state of bedhead. She is generally carefree but has a tendency to be overprotective and worry a lot, especially about her sidekick (who you will see soon!) who she considers to be her little sister. She is agile, fast and uses a dagger to protect herself. She also has a bandoleer that she wears that holds little mason jars/bottles. These little jars are filled with potions, spells and distractions which she often uses against her enemies.

Sigurd Stahl - Demolition

DEMOLITION

Real Name: Sigurd Stahl
Height: 6’8”
Weight: 380 lbs
Country of origin: Norway

Sigurd Stahl was living the dream.

Being an accomplished musician in his home country of Norway has gotten him everything he would ever want. Money, fame, women…he had it all.

One fateful night, an alien spacecraft crashed into his band’s tour bus, killing his band-mates. He attempted to escape the wreck, but was subsequently trapped by the aliens. Thinking that he would meet his end, Stahl fought them. One of the interlopers shot him with an energy beam meant to kill…but the alien didn’t realize that the human’s physiology would react to his weapon differently.

The blast transformed the musician into an unstoppable force of destruction, granting him invulnerability and increased strength. Stahl re-fashioned the costume he wore as he performed, and dubbed himself Demolition. A one man wrecking crew.

Why hello there!

Usually around this time, I would be panicking over some half-formed NaNoWriMo idea.  I have attempted that challenge every year since it’s conception but not once have I actually completed it.

Naturally, when my friend, challenge buddy, and Geekin’ Out cohort Bree in inadvertently brought this to my attention, I pounced.  My problem with NaNoWriMo was that I would always get distracted.  I would form and idea, but then four days later get stuck and form another idea, and so on and so forth until time ran out.  So this year, I’ve decided to jump onto a November writing challenge more my unfocused speed.

Yes, I’m a writer (or at least I pretend to be), so any pics attached will either be commissions or the actors/actresses I tend to envision.  There isn’t an artistic bone in my body.

I also must apologize in advance for the shoddy quality.  As much as I enjoy writing and character creation, I am entirely terrible at both.

Good luck to all!  (I’m already behind :P)

# 1 Undead Elvis

| November 1, 2011 | 6 Comments

Synopsis

Individuals who achieve an enormous amount of fame in their lifetime become living ideas embodied by their own reanimated corpses. As a result, a number of major pop culture icons and political figures have carried on after death, existing for as long as they remain prominent in the public consciousness. Most of the undead retreat into the shadows of the supernatural underground. Others choose to live more alternative lifestyles (Keith Richards for example died in 1978 and has effectively carried on since).

Bored with the quiet life of an undead pop star, Elvis joins a rag tag detective agency founded by President Theodore Roosevelt. At the start of the series, Roosevelt is recently re-deceased, replaced by an amnesic JFK.

Rounding out the squad we have Albert Einstein and the perpetually tripping astral projection of Timothy Leary. Together, they specialize in mysteries of the supernatural order in ZOMBIE PULP!

#1 Villers

| November 1, 2011 | 2 Comments

Just playing around with ideas for more Ebb Tide militants, for possible use in later installments of Bonnie Lass. Nothing solid, but it’s fun keeping them to a non-strict uniform while still embellishing it with their own individual touches.

Of any of these Ebb Tide characters that I’ve conceptualized so far, this Villers gal seems the most “hardcore,” the kind who takes her job very seriously (which is saying a lot for any of the Ebb Tide admirals).

Day 1: Eira

This is Eira!  Or at least I think that’s her name.  Eira is a malevolent and animalistic spirit that eats the soul of anything she can get her face on.

Not much is known about her other than she lives in a cave, terrorizes a town, and that she has been around for well over a century.  Once she has devoured a soul, the person is a mere husk of a creature.  Some have even killed her victims to save them the life without a soul.
It is possible to retrieve a soul after she has consumed it, but it required significantly high magical/spiritual skill and the reflexes to avoid her leech-like mouth.  Eira is not particularly intelligent, but she is capable of outsmarting her prey the same way a predatory animal would in the wild.

If you are unfortunate enough to wander into her territory or to be in her way on the rare occasions that she ventures out, there is a way to avoid her.  If you hear the sounds of a woman crying or moaning in pain, get away as fast as possible.  Run, hide, whatever you do, if she screams it will be the last thing you are conscious of hearing.  If you do see her, have some assurance that her arms are restrained.  When they are not, there is no hope.

Although he’s 65 years old, like many of his generation and social status he appears to be in his early 20s due to the Stepp Waters Co.-distributed water of the Fountain of Youth, which was discovered beneath a house in New Jersey circa 2009.

He is the most annoying, irritating person on the face of the earth – think Ruby Rhod in the era of YouTube.

#1 Sister Snipe

Sister Suzan Napier – AKA Sister Snipe – is one of many covert operatives working for the Vatican. Part of a special armed branch of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (The Inquisition, no less), she’s deployed only under extraordinary circumstances for missions that usually involve enoucounter with violent supernatural resistance.

Whether it’s a pesky gargoyle lurking around a cathedral, werewolves stalking the parishioners or a possession case where a good old exorcism just won’t do, Sister Snipe takes position on a rooftop, ready to do the good work of the Lord with her high-power rifle and her prayers.

DRAWING NOTES: Gah! Look at that hand holding the rifle. And the other one isn’t much better. I gotta take more care in drawing those next time. However, I must say the brush pen is a real charm to work with. Never used one before…

Day #1- Jared Evrett

| November 1, 2011 | 0 Comments

Meet Jared Evrett the most passifist Necromancer you’ll find. Jared grew up in a nobel rich family that did more than just ‘Play’ Cultists. Being brought up raising zombies and gods from hell you might think one might be used to the stench. Jared not so much. Although he knows every chant backwards and forwards he prefers not to participate in the more ‘active’ pursuits of most necromancers. Jared would rather curl up with the Necrocomicon and read it forward to back. He is well versed in many languages as well as several dead ones. He’s not to fond of the common zombie, ghost, or goul and most of the demons, demigods, and gods are too pretentious for him. (Although he himself was raised and acts quite snobbishly) If the man could ever get over his distaste for the dead he could probably plunge the world into a new apocolypse.  It would work pretty well for him since he’s quite the elitist. He also blends in seamleslly with the city’s upper class.

#1 Blaine/Joseph Jernigan

| November 1, 2011 | 0 Comments

Joseph Jernigan is a bald, tattooed, slightly overweight and surprisingly literate Texas felon on death row for the armed robbery and subsequent murder of a 75-year-old man. Once jailed, he is dogged by visions of a person who calls himself Blaine. Blaine repeatedly offers Jernigan freedom and immortality in exchange for his soul.

This character (Joseph) is based on a real person, who, after being given his lethal injection, had his body donated to science. After he died, his body was frozen and then sliced thinly so it could be scanned, piece by piece into a digital imaging system. Today they call him “The Visible Man” and many doctors use the 3D images of his body as a ‘perfect’ example of male anatomy. Jernigan was missing his appendix and one of his testicles. You can’t make this crap up: http://www.uh.edu/engines/epi1125.htm

By the end of Jernigan’s story, Blaine fulfills his end of the bargain by immortalizing Jernigan forever in a digital form, and influencing the scientists to release (limited) personal information about who he was. During his 12 years in prison, Jernigan learned the error of his ways and he accepts death as a punishment for his wrongs.

I could have listed these two characters separately, but since one couldn’t exist without the other (and since I definitely can’t draw Jernigan) I decided to list them together.

Here’s a little vignette about the first meeting of Joseph and his Faustian friend:

Blaine’s Game

Two big guys are dragging me by my pits across concrete. Their arms are meat hooks, bulging with muscle and fat and living sinews. My sinews are dead. I am nothing but dead meat. Already slaughtered, but still waiting to be butchered, and conscious enough to feel it. Just barely.

The big guys drop me hard in a square room with blank gray walls. The searing pain in my knees is a precious reminder of the last long drag I’ll have in a while, on a cigarette or otherwise. They take the restraints off of my wrists and ankles. I am off the hook. The literal one at least. Really, I won’t be off the hook for another forty-five years to life. This is the freezer, where they provide storage for the cold, and keep them cold.

“Goodbye, meat,” I say to the pair of bulging hulks. Their bulging hooks swing away.

They slam the door without saying a word, bolting it, leaving me in solitary confinement, so I won’t disturb the other popsicles. Some people can be so impolite. Nothing but darkness and a greasy green toilet to keep me company now.

Got a light?

I must’ve hit my head sometime recently.

You know, if there were no such thing as fire, no one would ever smoke.

I must’ve hit my head hard.

Leaning casually against the door of my cell…

“Who are you?” I ask.

Your name’s Jernigan isn’t it? I was kidding about you having a light. You’re all dark.

A man, I think it’s a man, in a black pinstripe suit, with a white ascot around his neck and dark gloves on his hands… and a purple-black hole where his face should be. He rubs his thumb and the tip of his index finger together in front of the cigarette dangling from—were there lips? A small flame appears there in his fingers and lights the cigarette. He lifts his fedora from his head and I can see the tip of the purple-black pantyhose he has stretched over his face.

My name’s Blaine. Obliged to meet you.

Maybe I shoulda plead insanity.

Nonsense, you’re perfectly sane.

When someone appears outta nowhere and starts talking to your inner monologue, all sure signs point somewhere south of sanity.

Such poetry.

He takes a long drag on his cigarette straight through the pantyhose and exhales, the smoke sifting through the material and pouring out from all around the edges of his head. If this guy has one swatch of skin anywhere on his body I might never know. Suddenly, I don’t want that cigarette as much as I should.

They say the insane don’t know they’re insane.

“Yeah, well I just think I’m insane so where does that leave me?”

Enlightened. Or… not.

I put my head in my hands. I’m beginning to think I’d rather have a conversation with the toilet. It’s hard to tell what a guy’s feeling when his face is covered in lady’s hosiery.

Listen, Jernigan, I’m not here to ruin your perfectly lovely day.

His sarcasm was enough to make me want to kill him. First I lose my freedom, then I lose my mind. My day couldn’t possibly get worse.

As a matter of fact, I’m here to improve your situation. You just tell me what you want, and it’s yours.

“I wasn’t born in the last five minutes. No figment of my imagination is getting me anything worthwhile.”

Try me.

A momentary silence seems like an eternity when a man with no eyes is staring you down. Okay, Blaine, I’ll play along. How about this: I don’t want to die.

Immortality. I can do that.

And I want out of here.

Done.

He wheezes out some more smoke, and then flicks the butt of his cigarette onto the floor, where it turns to ash.

But you’ve gotta do something for me.

Here comes the catch.

Let’s be traditional. Why don’t you give me… your soul.

He says it like it’s not important. Like he takes souls every day. Don’t I need a soul?

He bends over laughing this laugh that makes me sick. I feel like I’ll never laugh again.

You can still use it. It’ll just be mine.

“Are you the Devil?”

Hm.

I think he’s smiling. Through the tiny window in the solid steel cell door I can see the outside― whatever lights were left on start to flicker and die out.

When you don’t have a hope left in this world, does it matter?
