Character #3

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

I wanted to try to practice colouring dark skin some more. I guess the pink hair and darker skin was inpsired a bit by Nikki Minaj. As for the rest of the outift… It was lazily done. :< I think I always wanted to draw someone with the hair style. I’m going to name her… Er, Jessica. She just looks like one. I don’t know why.

#4 – The Siamese Pundits

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

When a purple meteor hits the press booth covering the 2012 Presidential debate, two top political pundits (one on the right, one on the left) are miraculously fused.  They may not share the same political opinions, but now they’ll have to share the same pants!

After a rough honeymoon period, The Siamese Pundits have  hit their stride, and their joint cable news show is now ratings gold.

But the question is, who calls the shots when they enter the voting booth?

4-Trigger McQuinch

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

I’ve noticed that most people here are using the 30 characters challenge to create characters that fit into their already existing works. My previous characters have been completely random creations, the result of whatever happened to flow from my pen at the time. For this one, I decided to try working with an existing framework, that of my detective comic Charlie Croc, Private Eye.

Trigger McQuinch is an underworld thug: a bootlegger and enforcer for Boss Mudpoole. He’s not much in the brains department, but he is tough. He can usually be found in one of the more disreputable pool halls in the swamp. His hobbies include shaking down little old ladies for their life savings and macrome.

If you’re interested in more from Charlie Croc’s world, you can read the original comic here.

#4 Halys of the River’s Echo

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

There once lived two girls, one who could Change the nature of things and one who–

–wrong time period. Flash-forward to not present day nor any day that matters to us. When does not matter much in stories except for happily ever after and once upon a time. So let’s go there. Not to happily ever after. That hasn’t come yet. And might not come at all. Happilys are so hard to obtain.

Once upon a time there was a girl named Halys. Whether she was beautiful and kind with other narratively-pleasing characteristics did not matter, because she had been born the middle daughter and the middle child, immediately dooming her to a long and boring life with no guarantees that it would even be a comfortable life. Her elder brother would get the financially comfortable life, inheriting the family printing business (which was lucrative and dangerous, due to the inherent power of words; not just anyone could do it, and not anyone who particularly liked having the same colour of hair for more than a week and clothes which would not spontaneously blossom) when their father passed. Her elder sister would have a comfortable if somewhat boring life, as it was already proposed that she marry the son of the local Aedile (which is something like a mayor, judge, and town crier all rolled into one). The younger twins were set for life, being the youngest son and daughter. It had only yet to be seen if it would be a long and exciting life, due to the high narrative casualty rate of fraternal twins.

Doomed by birth to inherit nothing and not even stand a ghost of a chance of striking out and seeking fortune and adventure (well, successfully seeking those), all hope seemed lost. The Royal Magic Conservatory might have taken her and her home-made Charms. However, the local Mviri (which is like a lawyer and a banker holding the hangman’s noose) wanted her for a bride and her parents accepted on her behalf. Oh, for the days when her opinion mattered.

The wedding bells have started to ring, preparations are being made, and Halys wants to run away more than ever, damn her stupidly low chances of survival and success. Or even just one of the two.

At the same time, the Kingdom resounds with the Gracious Lady‘s words:

“Try again.”

This time, the Lady (or Conduit, rather, but there’s not much difference in the end) haunts the streets of Halys’s town, which does not have a name so much as a description: the River’s Echo. She wanders the streets day and night, waiting for the one who will be her Consort this time around. A foolish, troublesome story that their kingdom has become trapped in with no hope of escape because the tale has no end.

Well, who knows. Maybe a runaway bride, no matter her order of birth, can bring about a happily ever after.

Or at least an end.

(Wouldn’t that be nice, my love?)

Character #2

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

Another randomly created, nameless character. She was supposed to be a dragon-like girl but my friend said she looks like a succubus.

And another friend says her colour scheme reminds her of some fandom somewhere. :< Ugh. Well, her colour scheme came out because I had an artist block and decided to draw something that would work well with the first five colour pencils I pulled out of my pencil case. I swear, this was unintentional.  I’ll name her… Lyla. She looks like a Lyla.

G. Brett Williams #4 – Dragon Soldiers

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

The Dragon Soldiers were an advanced race of reptilian humanoids that were conquered and subjugated by the Faceless aliens. The Faceless used their superior brains to manipulate the weaker-minded Dragons into acting as their standing army. Their world was decimated and abandoned and the Dragons served for years as the personal slaves and soldiers of the Faceless race until Cyclone and his forces liberated them and turned them against their masters on Earth.

Their are two types of Dragon Soldiers, the larger and brutish type that comprises the majority of the Faceless martial forces and the smaller chameleon-like Dragons who are best suited to intelligence gathering, assassination and subterfuge. While both Dragon races made up the Faceless armies, it was typically the larger that did most of the fighting and the smaller race that handled the Faceless’ more menial tasks.

After their liberation, Cyclone organizes intermixed groups of both Dragon races into psychic-hunting death squads and “advanced peacekeeping groups.”

Gravewalker

This mysterious person always is seen in the winter, walking from grave site to grave site, smiling as they pass each and every tombstone. Though the living stay clear, once notices an air of tranquility in the graveyard after they’ve left.

Once he scavenged for food. Now he burns down Walmarts for it. Everything’s more exciting with fire!

#4 Fluff

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

Fluff has been friends with Flump for a long time, and was part of the original duo with him. She is incredibly courageous, fairly smart, and is passionate about bringing some good to the world; especially in the face of evil.

#3: Nerva the Cave Demon

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

(I couldn’t really post yesterday so I’ll just post this now. I post my character for today a bit later.)

All Nerva does is lurk in his cave and feed on souls. Unfortunately though he is bound to his cave by a mystical force. So he uses a certain snow spirit to lure his victims in. Yeah, that’s about it.

Character #1

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

This is the first character I drew for the challenge. I drew this on Tuesday but I didn’t have time to upload anything during the week, so

I’m uploading this and the three others I drew. (Forgive the terrible image quality. Her skin is actually supposed to be pale blue.) The colour scheme of her and the flowers were inspired by my friend’s water bottle. She looks like a fantasy character, huh? She doesn’t actually have a name so I call her… Night-day Flower? Meh.

I took on a motto to follow with this 30 character challenge: Disregard anatomy completely. It’s the only way I can finish quick since I won’t spend too much time adjusting the proportions.

Yeah and I cut out edges and made it into a png image since there are more than one characters drawn on one page and it’s hard to just crop it out as a rectangle since other stuff will still be in the image.

# 4 – Jyorn Zenthhfyr

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

Jyorn is one of the three antagonists of the “Elementalists” story. I say antagonist because he’s really into a ‘bad guy’ so much as misguided and angry at the world. I won’t go into too many details because giving away his last name is a pretty big spoiler as it is. He is Kendric’s uncle, though Kendric has no idea where he has been for the past ten years, and aside from knowing that he was exiled from Himmerd, Kendric knows nothing else about him. Through happenstance Jyorn meets a wizard-summoner of great reknown by the name of “Drahomir Alexej” who is in good standing with the Queen of Scania. Drahomir takes notice of Jyorn’s ambition and knowledge of the sky island, and sets plans in motion to take advantage of those assets.

A small aside: please forgive some of the spellings. I’ve actually been researching 1400’s and 1500’s middle-europe and the Scandinavian regions for inspiration on this story, and I’ve kept some of the archaic name spellings for flavor. Some names are entirely made up like “Zenthhfyr”, but with words behind them and intent to mimic the ‘sound of pronunciation’ spelling that was common long before the 1900’s

Another aside: It’s amazing how creating villians helps put the rest of your plotline in order! I  LOVE making villians, now! 😀

#4 The Lady Bug

| November 4, 2011 | 2 Comments

Here is another one of my new characters. If any one is seeing these, they are all meant to be tongue-in-cheek. I am basically creating them on the fly, even though I have been thinking about the story I am wanting to write with them for about a week before the challenge began. I have only uploaded females so far, but I will get to the males soon. Here is The Lady Bug:

A master of technology, college-aged genius Katie Pillar aimed to win the International Greatest New Invention prize held annually in Switzerland. The winner of this prestigious award is given a large laboratory grant with which to further their research. Whipping up her mechanical magic, Katie went right to work on her newest masterpiece. Designed as a chamber that would allow scientists to compact energy molecules into smaller but equally proportionate ratios to their original dimensions, her D-N-Abler was a smashing success. Within this chamber, matter could be shrunken to one tenth of its original size without losing molecular stability and while holding true to its original proportions. Hailed as the new Einstein of her generation, Katie excitedly accepted the award. However, just as hew lab was nearly completed, disaster struck. The criminal possibilities provided by the D-N-Abler made it the perfect target for several of the most powerful crime magnates from across the globe. During a raid on her lab that was carried out by the Mafia, Katie shrunk herself to hide from the criminals. Scurrying under a teacup for safety, she witnessed a battle unlike any other. While the Mafia began to dismantle her machine, foreign extremists arrived to take it for themselves. The end result was several wounded people a destroyed lab and machine, and Katie stuck in miniature mode. She pulled herself together though, and due to her small size, was able to stay alive on the grilled cheese she left on her table. When news got out of the attack, she was able to alert police of where she was when she wrote “Help Me” on the table with breadcrumbs. Brought into a colleague’s lab she began making a miniature version of the machine, though no longer in the form of a chamber. No longer would she trust this technology to ever leave her side. She instead perfected the invention further and created a D-N-Abler device that fit within a tiny jacket that she herself could wear. Realizing the greater potential of the improved machinery, it was clear that the attack on her lab was a blessing in disguise. She could now use her techno talents and D-N-Abler to fight criminals like the ones who had destroyed her technology. She now uses micro might to make right as the heroine known as the Lady Bug.

I never know what to name my little creatures…. This one likes to get together with all his buddies and hold roller derby competitions inside the bathtub.

#03 Roberta Smith

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

A simple businessman, except she’s a woman. She doesn’t care much for her own femininity, and tries her best to blend in with her coworkers and be “one of the guys.” She starts seeing her secretary, and feelings develop beyond the casual powerplay office fling she was expecting, as she tries to puzzle out how to “be the man” in this situation. This future-retro setting sees all sorts of strange new humans and interspecies relationships. Former social roles are breaking and rearranging faster than anyone can keep up with.

#4 Don

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

Don is the barman at the local bar where the guys can often be found on cold nights, weekends and pretty much whenever they have a spare moment and a fiver or so. Don is stupidly nice and is often referred to as ‘gentlemanly’ but Holmes doesn’t particularly like him, because ‘he stole my haircut but kept the sh*tty colour and’s almost stolen Dan’s name’. but the guys are sure that it’s just because Don has a job at a bar and he doesn’t

Day #4- Rory

| November 4, 2011 | 2 Comments

Rory is an anthropomorphic frog who is missing his right arm. Although he is referred to as a male, he is actually genderless. (Most frogs can change their gender in actual life, anyway!)

He lives a tribal sort of lifestyle, hunting with spears.  He lives  far away from any civilization with his family and friends.

#4 Timothy Gray

| November 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

Timothy Gray

Poor Timothy Gray was born in 1840, joined the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as a freed slave, and died in one of the last battles of the American Civil War. But he woke again days later, whole, but with vivid memories of his painful demise. For over a century since that time he has discovered that he does not age, and even when killed, will rise again days later. Without any great skill or courage, he has tried to use his curse to right the wrongs in the only way he can. He stalks the terrorists of the world: racist hate mongers, religious militants, and genocidal dictators, and shadows them, begging them to understand the evil in their ways. He is tortured and killed more often than he is heeded, but he always comes back sure, quiet and relentless to haunt again.

A little under a month ago I started working on a comic my husband came up with called “Now What” I created two strips and then fizzled.  I decided characters 3 and 4 would be the two main characters from that strip, to hopefully motivate me to go back to them.  So, here is the alien counterpart to “Now What”.

Day 3 and 4: The Watcher and The Listener

| November 4, 2011 | 1 Comment

The Watcher and The Listener

Two of three leaders of the small country of Emryet, home to the river port town Fairjet (Day 2) lives in. The third leader of this country is The Speaker. I felt these two should be posted together, as they are sisters. The Speaker is their mother, and will be posted tomorrow.

The first sister, The Watcher, gathers information critical to the survival of the country, and relates them to her mother. The Watcher wears a blindfold, symbolizing how she uses the eyes of others to watch. She is trained in war strategy, and advises her mother during conflicts. She represents power and intelligence.

The second sister, The Listener, is the voice of the people. Her “ears”, 2 citizens of varying social status from each town, gather information about the welfare of the people of Emryet. She then tells her mother of the challenges the people face, or the success that has been had. The Listener always covers her ears, symbolizing how she uses the ears of others to listen. She is trained in business strategy, and advises her mother during economical hardships. She represents compassion and wealth.

…and that’s all for The Watcher and The Listener! See y’all tomorrow, with The Speaker!
