#17 – Captain Star

| November 20, 2011 | 2 Comments

17-CaptainStar

Captain Star is a character I came up with when I was a little kid. Back then, he had an underground base with a supercar and a super doggie sidekick. His uniform was red, white & blue with a big gold star on his chest. He was the first superhero I had created; I thought it would be cool to update him 30 years later. His current look comes from a design I did for a dead end project I worked on a few years ago. I always thought the suit was cool and a perfect fit for Captain Star. When I created him, he was just a Do-gooder, nothing to deep or dramatic. I was about 7 so nothing too complicated. But I thought it would be interesting to have a Superman type ‘hero’ who didn’t answer to countries or governments or operated within the laws of the land. He would save those who need saved, help the helpless, but also punish the guilty and eliminate those who pose a serious enough threat to global peace. No more peace talks, sanctions, negotiations, etc. in order to haggle out peace with dictators. Captain Star would drop down in the middle of a nasty dictator’s military parade of weapons, nukes and troops and would wipe everything off the map. Kind of WATCHMEN-esque, I suppose.

#16 – Rasko Rebasto

This is Rasko Rebasto — His alien race originally appeared at the beginning of my webcomic MORGANNA OF THE BORGS. Rasko is a character I have thought a lot about but haven’t really fleshed out until now.

#15 – Arethousa-The Water Elemental

| November 15, 2011 | 2 Comments

Meet Arethousa the water elemental who is as old as the Earth itself! I introduced one of her counterparts, Faultline, in last years 30Characters. The last two Earth elementals, fire & air, will show up soon! Enjoy!

#14 – Jim Speedwell – Stuntman

14-Speedwell

Hot off the drawing table — Here’s Jim Speedwell-STUNTMAN! I have a love for old 60’s & 70’s action movies like ‘Smokey & The Bandit’, ‘Hooper’, ‘Bullitt’, etc. when the stunts and crazyass driving were all very real, not CGI B.S.! The don’t make them like that anymore, so Jimmy here is my little tribute to that era. Think equal parts Burt Reynolds, Steve McQueen, Kurt Russell, Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges and maybe a little John Wayne, too. I think he’s still a character that could be very cool and solid with the right storyline behind him. Enjoy!

#13 – Noriko: The Last Assassin

| November 13, 2011 | 3 Comments

Noriko is a revamp of a character I created for a DOA comicbook project several years ago. She had a slightly different look and a sillier name but that was about it. No history or background, just a look. So I’ve attached her to a storyline where several black ops assassins that work for a sinister global power have been contracted to take each other out. They don’t know that they’ve each of them been targeted by the other until Noriko discovers one of her targets is an old flame. Last year’s characters Ironwolf and Deadeye tie in to the story along with Killshot; he will make his appearance in 30Characters between now and day 30! 🙂 Enjoy!

NOTE: I’m sucha forgetful douche sometimes…BIG SHOUTOUT to Jamie Gambell for lending a hand the other night helping me finalize Noriko’s design. Your input was a huge help and most appreciated! THANK YOU!!

#12 – Ragged Roy

12-RaggedRoy

The BRATPACK have their first villain to contend with! Probably the creepiest character I’ve come up with. Creepiest looking anyways. Not much on the power scale but you don’t have to be loaded with powers to be a nasty evil dude.

#11 – Tessy Tantrum

| November 11, 2011 | 3 Comments

I think this one is my favorite so far. 🙂 A little twist on the Hulk’s ‘the madder he gets, the stronger he gets’ mantra. What if the anger didn’t make a person stronger; only BIGGER…? A fun character to whip up. Hope you dig it!

#10 – Ice Maiden

| November 10, 2011 | 2 Comments

10-IceMaiden

This one was based on drawing done several years ago, lost in my stash of archived art. Not 100% happy with the pose but I think it’s pretty successful. Enjoy!

#9 – Visigoth

| November 9, 2011 | 2 Comments

9-Visigoth

A hero from ancient times finds himself sent to present day! Visigoth was inspired by an old Marvel Comics ‘What If’ issue where Conan the Barbarian was transported to present day (then the 1970’s.) I read it a long time ago but I thought that idea was pretty interesting and has been stuck in the back of mind for a long time. Enter the LOTR movies for a little more influence — and there you have it. I started roughing his look out for 30Characters last year but time didn’t allow for his appearance. Enjoy!

More Professor Neutrino mayhem! This one Neutrino considers a ‘failure.’ Poor, poor Ratboy…

#5 - Longhorn

Professor Neutrino’s beefy Minotaur muscleman!

#4 – The Screecher

| November 4, 2011 | 3 Comments

Hot on the heels of Professor Neutrino’s debut is another of his lackeys — the Screecher! With her black wings she terrorizes humanity from above! Her deafening shrieks drive all to madness! All will succumb to her deathcry!

#3 – Professor Neutrino

| November 3, 2011 | 7 Comments

#3 Professor Neutrino

At long last, the maniacal scientist Professor Neutrino makes his debut! The Professor is responsible for the sexy, slithery Copperhead, and the poisonous fishman, Blowfish from last year’s 30Characters challenge. He’s added a few more creations to his army of mutated henchmen this year! Can nothing stop him?!

#2 – Rod Cones

| November 2, 2011 | 4 Comments

2-Rod Cones

A fun, goofy character. Simple as that. Rod’s name came first — as in the rods and cones in the eye which perceive light and colors. From there, the rest was easy. 🙂 Enjoy!

#1 – Jonah Faraday – Demonhunter

Jonah Faraday - Demonhunter

Hello fellow 30Characters Creators! This is Jonah Faraday – supernatural savior of our realm. Enjoy!

#16 Jolly Roger

| November 23, 2010 | 5 Comments

All I had when I began this guy was the name ‘Jolly Roger’, that’s it. I think that’s the fun part of this – making stuff on the fly, pushing the imagination to work fast and loose. He’s not my favorite but I think he’s pretty unique and does give me a chuckle. 🙂

#13-15 Vance Starblaster & Company

| November 22, 2010 | 2 Comments

WOO-HOO! Mr. Lister is back with a pack of space pirates! These three have been around for years in my stack of sketchbooks & doodles. I have some stories written for them, its just a matter of making it happen in between everything else I’ve got going on. 🙂 Enjoy!

#11 Ironwolf

| November 13, 2010 | 2 Comments

Ironwolf’s design goes back to high school — He had a whole different name, story & background — nothing related to Ironwolf at all other than his appearance.

#10 Gumshoe

| November 12, 2010 | 4 Comments

Winston ‘Gumshoe’ Ralls is much different than what I had initially pictured. He was very ‘Rorschah’ looking with the typical long coat/fedora and a domino mask; that all got tossed with a different look not typically associated with ‘master detective.’ More influenced by ‘L.A. Confidential’ I think. Might of went a little heavy on the Photoshop trying for gritty/old photo but I think it’s still pretty successful. Enjoy!

#9 Faultline

| November 10, 2010 | 6 Comments

Faultline’s real name is unpronounceable by the human tongue. It was originally dubbed ‘The Faultline Monster’ by the media as it came crawling up from the depths of the San Andreas fault line. In little time, it was shortened to ‘Faultline’.

#8 Dr. Bling

| November 10, 2010 | 6 Comments

Another hero! Malcolm will be the ‘team leader’, so-to-speak, of a group of mutant teens. Their powers, including Malcolm’s, are brand new to each of them. Learning to deal with their bizzare abilities and deal with their rough lives will be their biggest challenge. Cool idea with a lot of rough edges. Could be something pretty solid with some more brain storming.

#7 Devastator

| November 7, 2010 | 4 Comments

Did I tell you I love Kung-Fu/martial arts movies too? Jackie Chan rules, second only to the master – Bruce Lee. I’d love to flesh this story out further…one day… **Special thanks to Chad Welch for helping iron out some Devastator difficulties! Thanks, Brother! 🙂

#6 Deadeye

| November 6, 2010 | 5 Comments

Do spies ever retire? Surely they all don’t get bumped off or disappear, etc. I always wondered that about James Bond when I was a kid. Eventually, he’s gonna be too old to chase international villains, drive fast cars and seduce every woman he meets, right? This is where my idea for Donovan Drake, AKA: Deadeye came from. It’s not a new, brilliant story but he’s my answer to the that adolescent question. I went a different direction with the art this time. He’s a very 60’s flavored type of character. Equal parts Bond, Nick Fury, Man from U.N.C.L.E. so I went for a 60’s styled rendering to match. I think it’s pretty successful!

#5 Copperhead

| November 5, 2010 | 6 Comments

Ooooh, that madman Professor Neutrino has done it again — transforming an innocent college student into another of his mutated lackeys!

#4 Convict

| November 4, 2010 | 5 Comments

A grizzly spin on the saying ‘What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.’

#3 Blowfish

| November 3, 2010 | 8 Comments

The Blowfish emits a neurotoxin through his razor sharp spines. If he puts enough pressure into his ‘puff’ he can expel the neurotoxin out of the spines into the air as fine mist! And YES, I revealed the name of another character to make his debut this month — the evil uberscientist, Professor Neutrino! (I’m feelin’ my inner Stan Lee taking over!) 🙂

#2 BlockBoss

| November 2, 2010 | 4 Comments

I absolutely love ‘The Godfather‘ trilogy, ‘Goodfellas’, ‘The Sopranos’ and everything else mob related, so a mafia bad guy was just a natural direction for one of these guys. Kinda silly, with a wink to Hammerhead and Tony Montana. 🙂

Here is the first for the month! Drawn & colored in Photoshop; logo created in Illustrator. Don’t have much to add that’s not already in the graphic. Favorite parts are the boots and skull hilt of the sword. All comments & critiques welcome — Enjoy!
