No. 13- Sean “The Mechanic” Marion

| November 13, 2011 | 0 Comments

Name: Sean ‘The Mechanic’ Marion

Age: 25

Ethnicity: Causcasian

Occupation: Supervillain

Short Background:
Sean Marion never was a top villain. In fact, he was just above a D-list villain and the only thing impressive about him were the people he had been beaten by. When his last bank robbery fails, Sean finds himself evicted from his apartment and forced to live with his worst enemy.

His mother.

He has the power to manipulate different types of machinery. With enough focus and drive, he could be a serious contender, but his tendency to slack off has sealed his fate at the bottom of the barrel.

Design:
Jumpsuits, Goggles, and Boots.

#13 – Noriko: The Last Assassin

| November 13, 2011 | 3 Comments

Noriko is a revamp of a character I created for a DOA comicbook project several years ago. She had a slightly different look and a sillier name but that was about it. No history or background, just a look. So I’ve attached her to a storyline where several black ops assassins that work for a sinister global power have been contracted to take each other out. They don’t know that they’ve each of them been targeted by the other until Noriko discovers one of her targets is an old flame. Last year’s characters Ironwolf and Deadeye tie in to the story along with Killshot; he will make his appearance in 30Characters between now and day 30! 🙂 Enjoy!

NOTE: I’m sucha forgetful douche sometimes…BIG SHOUTOUT to Jamie Gambell for lending a hand the other night helping me finalize Noriko’s design. Your input was a huge help and most appreciated! THANK YOU!!

12-RaggedRoy

The BRATPACK have their first villain to contend with! Probably the creepiest character I’ve come up with. Creepiest looking anyways. Not much on the power scale but you don’t have to be loaded with powers to be a nasty evil dude.

POP GUNS TAKE OVER KAFKASTAK!! PRESIDENT SIRRAH WILL HAVE “SEAT OF HONOR” AT TONIGHT’S CONCERT

GRIEV – Tensions rise behind closed doors at the UN, where rumor has it negotiations between president Istalinov Sirrah and the mediators representing the families of the more than 300 “political prisoners” Sirrah has kept in the nation’s Gulags for almost a decade now have come to an abrupt ending.

It was the dawn of the year 2000 when Sirrah’s “Militant Front for a Unified Kafkastak” movement dethroned the royal family and assumed control of the country. The popular support Sirrah counted with at the time, analysts say, was one of the deciding factors of his victory. However, it’s been a decade of terror for the citizens of the Easter European nation, who went from being oppressed by a despotic monarchy to being oppressed by the military who once were charged with protecting them.

With civil unrest starting to boil and riots becoming an every day event for the kafkastaki people, the announcement that the overnight world sensation and Billboard chart-breaking Dutch trio “Pop Guns”, who first came into the spotlight with their very controversial cover of Sinatra’s classic “I did it my way” and even more controversial music video which won them their first Grammy, would be having an impromptu concert right in the capital city of Griev has caught everyone in both the entertainment and political world by surprise.

Spokespersons for the now millionaire group comprised of lead singer/guitarist Raspberry De’Laight, bassist/other lead singer Blueberry Bunn and drummer/backup singer Blackberry Punch have denied the accusations that the concert is a giant marketing plot designed to attract international audiences with what some journalists are already calling “a tasteless display of shock tactics in the face of human tragedy”.

“The girls have gone completely out of their way and have put themselves and their staff in danger all in the hopes that they can bring a little joy and entertainment to the kafkastakies” said the group’s manager and producer Conrad Teally yesterday morning during a press conference. “The girls have all heard about the situation in Griev and in Kafkastak in general and they very selflessly just wanted to give these good people a small token of good will and solidarity. A few hours of music and levity where they can forget all the ugliness and enjoy themselves”.

Disingenuous as it may sound to try and sell this as the truth, Teally, who rose to the top of the music industry during the late 70s only to crash and burn alongside Disco during the mid 80s and has miraculously managed to once again catch lighting in the bottle with Pop Guns’ first two albums, is actually not lying. At least, not entirely.

Inside sources have indeed confirm that Pop Guns’ surprise pit stop in Kafkastak has  aussd the group’s “Triple Fantasy” tour to go almost 5 million dollars over budget in order to have the National Football Plaza ready for tonight’s big show. Ironically though, it seems most of that money will be going directly into the pockets of the Kafkastak Tourism and Culture minister, Vladimir Kolcjac, who was in charge of expediting the process of issuing the multiple permits necessary for Pop Guns to set stage and perform within their borders.

And there is also the matter of president Sirrah receiving a personal invitation from the girls themselves to assist to tonight’s event, which seems to go completely against their hopes of providing the citizens with an escape from their very harsh national reality. Many expect tonight’s festivities to end in tragedy, yet Teally remains optimistic.

“The girls want to bring the nation together. That is their number one goal tonight. They want to bring the people and the government together under one roof in the hope that music can show them a way to reconcile their differences and work together once again to build a new, better nation. The girls are still young. They’re still idealistic. They truly believe everything I just told you, and God bless them for it”.

***

Everything had to be perfect.

That is what Raspberry De’Laight kept telling herself while going over the Gulag’s schematics over and over again, memorizing each and every detail, the mission briefing on one hand and a water bottle on the other.

If not, hundreds of people who’d been imprisoned against their will for a decade, their families, and entire nation and perhaps even the World could be at stake.

Raspberry hated this. The emptiness in her stomach and the tightness of her pink satin outfit for their opening act. It cut on her midriff section, barely letting her breath. It squeezed her breasts almost up to her chin and all the frills and veils were starting to put her on edge. And don’t get her started on the silver booty shorts. Just the fact that she had to wear them, as if she didn’t have enough body issues as it was, but it was like they were designed to ride up. She hated them. And her stockings were itchy.

The truth of the matter was that femininity was something that made Raspberry De’Laight intensely uncomfortable, having grown up the only woman amongst her two brothers and her father, a career army sergeant whose job had him jumping from army base to army base. Her mother had bailed on him shortly after her little brother’s birth for reasons she neither knew nor care. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Her father and older brother provided her with all the love and care she never attempted to give. Still, the young sergeant had been very ill prepared to raise a young girl all on his own.

So, he didn’t.

He simply raised another boy and left the complicated discussions on womanhood in the hands of the base nurse.

And so, Raspberry had grown up an army brat in mind, body and spirit. Constantly covered in cuts, bruises and mud, she preferred to wear baggy clothes and have her hair cut short by the base barber. She knew nothing about makeup, or painting her nails. Heck, she’d been wearing the wrong size of bra ever since she’s had boobs. So finding herself now having to wear cutesy, short and revealing clothing, makeup, earrings, long hair and high heels has been more than a mere culture clash for her. More than once the idea of being caught by the enemy sounds more enticing than having to perform yet another concert.

Still, when her “laser vision” first manifested itself, the first thought in Raspberry’s mind was using her gift to serve her country, just like her father. The fact that her other talent, super strength, bloomed in the middle of her UN training pretty much closed the deal on her drafting. And not only was she powerful, she was an apt pupil, knew how to take orders and was respectful of the chain of commands and less prone to bouts of insubordination than all of the other applicants.

They had found their team leader.

Blackberry Punch had no place she’d rather be in the whole wide world.

It wasn’t just the celebrity aspect though. The fame. The awards. The appreciation. The beautiful designer dresses, the sound of the crowd going wild for you, their applause after your final bow. Those are the kind of things every little girl dreams with her whole life. Some more than others.

Blackberry spent much of a very rough childhood on the streets, neglected by her parents and cared for only by the thugs and dealers of her neighborhood who recruited her into their business. By fourteen, Blackberry had a police file taller than her. She spent the next two years in and out of juvi before her super powers started manifesting themselves.

Her super power, the eggheads had explained to her, was personal mass manipulation. She could make herself light as a feather and completely intangible or gain a ton or two of added weight, becoming more and more impervious the heavier she got. It was a talent she only started to fool around with by herself, but that she fully mastered and developed under the care of the UN handlers and trainers.

Now close to her nineteenth birthday, Blackberry was the older, more seasoned member of the group both in their front as celebrities as well as in their role as secret agents, which curiously enough seemed to be the part of this whole experience she enjoyed the most. Her years of living in the streets had developed in her a love of fear and danger. The more tense and life-threatening the situation, the more alive that made her feel.

Her psych evaluations and half of the handlers tried to stop at all costs that the Security Council drafted Blackberry for the team. They felt this particular personality trait could end up backfiring on both the team and the UN, as her need for extreme trills almost bordered on the pathological. Yet the Chief would hear none of it. He had scouted Blackberry himself. He had drafted her and kept a close eye on her for the entirety of her training. The paper pushers couldn’t understand it. There was no way. What that young woman had was something only field agents, people who’ve done the job and dirtied their hands can recognize in each other: The will to succeed and survive.

Still, the insistence of the psychiatrist had kept her from becoming team leader. Not that Blackberry particularly cared. She had no need to run the show. She actually preferred just being pointed to her target and then unleashed upon it, like a shell being shot off a tank’s barrel.

That was the good live.

Blueberry Bunn, or at least that had been the name chosen for her by her handlers, was at that moment fulfilling all of her little rituals and pre-show eccentricities. A superstitious girl since her childhood, Blueberry was busy at the moment going through the band’s catering table.

Contrary to their status as world famous pop stars and would-be divas, Pop Guns’ tour contract only had four small conditions:

  • A fully stocked catering table filled with hamburgers, fresh fruit, water and salad.
  • Fresh flowers.
  • A TV with the remote.
  • Absolute privacy after the concert. They’d gladly meet and greet people before the show, but not after.

It was now an hour before the show and Blueberry had already finished most of the giant burger tray, the fruit and the salad being the first thing gone whenever she sat down to eat. The table, however, was stocked to serve at least six people.

Blueberry had no type of eating disorder. That was not the girl her mother had raised her to be. No, Blueberry was able to eat like that and still keep the young, toned body of a 17 year old girl due to the hyper-accelerated metabolism she was born with. One of the side effects of her super speed.

Pop Guns was a front. An incredibly well crafted front. Like the other two, Blueberry had been recruited after careful study, scrutiny and training to be a part of an elite special ops team under the direct supervision of the United Nations security council. The group was born of the necessity of the UN to take action in situations where it’s hands had been tied down and required from direct but plausibly deniable action.

The band cover had been probably the security council’s greatest idea ever. This gave their operatives the freedom to travel everywhere in the World, bypassing even the tightest security thanks to their fame and the image of banality and air headedness that was associated with celebrity disguised them better than any make-up and fake documents the UN could ever provide the girls with.

This was already the Pop Guns’ tenth mission, yet Blueberry would get the pre-concert, pre-mission jitters each and every time regardless. After the concert was over, she would have to be the first inside the hot zone, using her super speed and stealth to infiltrate the main Gulag just outside the capital city to disable the security for her team mates.

She hoped she could avoid using physical violence, which she despised. A good mission, at least for her, meant not having to throw a single punch. Unfortunately, that seemed to be the exception and not the rule.

13 – Kensai by Beausephus

CHARACTER NAME:  Kensai

DATE OF CREATION:  1991

CONCEPT:  A student of martial arts/mysticism gains a new level of ability, power, and awareness, but his aged Sensei dies before the student can truly undertand the depth and price of his abilities.

_____________________________

I’ve always had a fondness for IRON FIST and DOCTOR STRANGE, and the mystical origins of pulp heroes like THE SHADOW and THE PHANTOM.   There’s so much territory to explore with the western outsider archetype in a forgotten magic/high-tech city.  JACK KIRBY loved this concept.   Not can you lead a character through the exploration whole new “forgotten but ancient magical city” but also investigate the significance of the perception of a Western Dominated culture in terms of ancient traditions and mystical power.

So what would happen if these “chosen one” style characters, these inheritors of great ancient power and traditions, were left without a guide?  What would happen if they didn’t have someone to show them how to use their abilities or the depth of understanding that wielding tremendous ancient power must necessitate?  Ultimately what is the difference between Baron mordo and Stephen Strange?  Baron Mordo lusted after the power, and Strange felt he was unworthy.  What would happen if supreme power was given to someone whose self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy were left alone to fester without the support/education of mentor?

This is the conflict at the core of the character, KENSAI.  He weilds great power, but is not aware of the personal and global price he might be paying, or might incur if he incorrectly uses his abilities.  The fine line defines the character, because he is constantly exploring what it means to take steps to one side of the line or the other whether he likes it or not.

The storyline that goes through my mind with KENSAI is almost like the “Kung-Fu” TV series or what J. Michael Straczynski attempted to do recently on Superman… KENSAI would wander the earth, meeting people and discover who he is, what exactly the limits and depth of his abilities are, and learning from the successes and many failures he creates with his skills and abilities.

No, of course, KENSAI would not walk around shirtless with tattoos flowing like liquid and emitting glowing energy from beneath his skin, so that very visual is the base of a character who was essentially an Iron Fist rip-off in 1991 and developed into something more over the years.

Thanks for checking out my stuff.

The Event

A being of incomprehensible power from another dimension, the Event first
made himself known in 1984 when he abducted the world’s heroes and villains for the first Invisible War in the Invisiverse.

A giant being, his motivation is as unknown as his face. The Event pulled heroes and villains both to the Invisiverse for a grand battle. It was only Dr. Omnibus and his trans-dimensional plothole that allowed everyone to escape, but not before Squadron Leader died in the fracas.

#12 Road Rage

| November 13, 2011 | 0 Comments

Whew…made it with 5 minutes left in the day…

I don’t have time to type up the whole origin story tonight and still upload it while it is still the 12th. I’ll add it tomorrow!

Car fanatic and avid fan of all things NASCAR, Jimmy John Jacobs had a need for speed he always tried to feed. Collecting speeding tickets like a redneck collects spare tractor parts, Jimmy’s trouble with the law was getting further and further out of hand. During a car chase, Jimmy’s adrenaline addiction finally got the best of him. While outrunning the police, Jimmy’s 69 Camaro was topping 125 mph and he began to see the limits of his driving ability. Attempting to race through an industrial park in the darkness of night at that speed was a foolish decision that nearly cost Jimmy his life. Losing control of his car, Jimmy drove into a dumping area that contained hundreds of drums containing hazardous material that would be loaded in special trucks for disposal the following morning. Among those materials was a dangerous compound developed for the molecular acceleration of rocket fuels. As Jimmy’s car spun wildly, he was tossed out of his window while his car plunged into explosive blasts as it crashed into other materials in the dump. Luckily, Jimmy was safe from the explosion, but was slammed into the barrels of the accelerating fluids. His skin soaked it in and he immediately began to toxify.  The police and emergency crew were able to arrest Jimmy and admit him into medical care. While in a comatose state Jimmy began to recover as his own molecular structure began to adapt with the acceleration compound. He began to recover immediately and awoke to the sensation that the world around him was happening in slow motion. At first he believed he was drugged, but soon found he could calibrate his senses to change speed. He laughed as he quickly snuck out of the hospital at lightning speed. Now, disguised as Road Rage, Jimmy rushes from one new problem he creates for himself to another. But he has so much running at speeds of up to 350 miles per hour that he doesn’t seem to care.

#12: Boost

| November 12, 2011 | 1 Comment

A power amplifier, Boost.

Young Sara Walsh has a special ability; she can enter the bodies of people and amplify their abilities, particularly super humans. A power booster, Sara was abducted from her home by the Archangel Corporation’s private military group and brought in for tests on the the potential her ability can do for their living weapons. The discovered that her ability gives no drawbacks to anyone using her, as she absorbs all the damage an overloaded person would normally take and with her healing factor, stay alive to do it again. This went on for years, until the Front Line, now waging a war with the Archangel Corporation, free her during a facility transfer. Rescued, the Front Line attempts to offer her membership into the group, yet Sara only wants to see her family, only to find out that the truth was, it was her own family that sold her to the Archangel Corporation.

Betrayed and now having a reason to fight Archangel, Sara joins the Front Line under the code name, Boost, where the team implements her as a support/rescue operative and provide her asylum and treatments with the Loman Organization.

Abilities: Boost has the ability to amplify another individuals abilities. This is achieved by her essentially shutting off the body’s own limit controls in tandem with her own energy pouring into the subject to increase one’s abilities exponentially. To prevent the physical and mental pain that would occur should an individual “overclock” themselves, Boost absorbs all the stress and pain into her own body and takes the hit for them. Her healing factor enables her to recover from these injuries, yet if she uses or absorbs too much, her body will physically shut down so that it can recover completely.  Boost has also recently learned to use her ability offensively by “overloading” an individual by amplifying them to the point that they themselves pass out from the shockwave of pain, yet she still receives the pain backlash, albeit in a reduced capacity.

Creation: I can not take complete credit for the credit for the character, save for her design and name, as she was given to me by former owner of Brainstorm Comics, Robert Kimmons, as he told of a superhero character he used that would amplify other character’s abilities, yet didn’t have an explanation on how her powers would work. I supplied one based on Naruto’s Guy and Rock Lee’s own ability to release their own mental limits, and he offered to let me use the character for my own comic use. The offensive use of her ability came from watching Scryed’s Scheris Adjani’s Alter, Eternal Devote, used to deliver shocks of pain to an enemy, so I included it into her ability list. Her  first name was actually based on a girl I knew in college and for a long while, her visual design was based on her, until recent as I had to draw this character from off the top of my head and I was also updating her attire for this challenge.

Universe/Storyline: The Band

Universe details: In the isolated city of Crescent where these characters live, superpowers spring from close encounters with death. Only people born in the city can gain these powers, and since this is a relatively new settlement, the first generation of people born there are just starting to show signs of super-fication. This means mostly kids and teens. Of the teens, Camille, Max, Amelia, Walter, and Rin decide to team up and form a band. They take it upon themselves to help other kids who are just getting powers/dealing with death. Eventually, when The Band realizes that everyone deserves to be informed about the city’s unique predicament, they try to reach every kid in the city at once by putting on a live concert.

Height: 5’ 7”

Body Type: Athletic, broad shouldered, but still kinda skinny. Could be a quarterback.

Hair: Black, short but voluminous.

Eyes: Dark brown.

Race: Latino

Age: 16

Attire: Average attire for his age. T-shirts and shorts, cross-trainers. He doesn’t stand out from the crowd.

Superpowers: Mimicry (subconscious, primary)- When Carlos is attacked, he has an instinctual defensive reaction to imitate the attack exactly as it’s coming to him. And when I say exactly, I mean, exactly. Carlos temporarily shape-shifts into his attacker and imitates their moves as if he were the mirror image of him/her. Anything that he is being attacked with is also temporarily copied. This reaction only goes on so long as Carlos feels threatened, and he can only reflect whoever is directly threatening him at the time. If multiple people attack him at once, those attacking are each countered by a reflection of themselves at the same time, in the same place. To an outside observer this might look like Carlos has surrounded himself with mirrors (but the reflections can move in 3D space).

Personality: Carlos has always wanted to be a leader. He is captain of the basketball team at Crescent High, and he wants to study law and eventually run for city government. Carlos always believed that an admirable government ran the city of Crescent, until he saw The Band’s first concert, and the overreaction of law enforcement to The Band’s ‘peaceful protest’ of the city’s law. The concert is followed by the ‘Powers Riots’, during which many confused and newly empowered teens run rampant in the city thinking they can do whatever they want. Carlos tries to help them, but his vision of an ideal social system has fallen to pieces in the chaos. Instead, Carlos decides to gather as many people that will follow into a group called the ‘New Powers’. Together they attempt a hostile takeover of the city in order to run it under their ideal version of the law. Among the New Powers are “Greenbeard” Greg Beardsley, “Liftoff” Laurie Simmons, and “Insomniac” Tyler Farillo. Carlos finds that he greatly enjoys leading these powerful people, though he’s not sure where they’re headed. Like most revolutionaries, he is not evil; he is only trying to create a better future for himself and his followers.

Power source/backstory:

  1. Carlos was at The Band’s first concert, where overenthusiastic heroes killed a person disguised as a usually robotic police officer.

Theme Song: Take the Power Back- Rage Against the Machine

Day 12: XENIX THE TECHNOGOTH

| November 12, 2011 | 0 Comments

Xenix The Technogoth

The year is 2501.  Earth four centuries earlier was devastated by a nuclear holocaust.  A global conglomerate that anticipated the event hid underground until the background radiation was safe enough to come to the surface and take whatever was left.  They rose up, subjigated the local survivors and turned them into a slave race known as The Technogoths.  The corporation’s head modeled this new government and culture after the Roman Empire.  Four centuries later.  The decendents of the executives became the nobilility of what will be known as THE NEOROMANA.  A one-world government that whose prosperity and comfort is based on The Technogoth slave labor.  Some are sent to mining camps, plantations, some are servants, and others are sent to entertain the masses in death sport in the arenas.

This is the story of one such Technogoth gladiator named Xenix.  Who was genetically conditioned to be the ultimate gladiator.  Who would eventually become so powerful that he broke the bonds of slavery and would lead an uprising against his people’s oppressors!

Evilspeed : Status : Villain

Evilspeed possesses the neovidual ability of superhuman speed. Evilspeed can exact any action at these high speeds. The limit to how fast Evilspeed can move is not officially known (because of course he would never cooperate with any official testing). However, it has been recorded during an encounter by the S.C.O.P.E. metropolitan city scale security organization that Evilspeed can easily move beyond the speed of sound for hours at a time.

Evilspeed is one of three members belonging to the villain sibling group “The Tri-Brothers Bedlam”; a group which his older brother Blister Fist is also a member.

G. Brett Williams #12 – Amelia du Couer, The Ace of Hearts

| November 12, 2011 | 0 Comments

Amelia du Coeur – Amelia was born into a prominent French family with very, very old money. Her mother and father were both anthropologists and archaeologists. Unfortunately for Amelia, they were also very busy and rarely ever home. Both parents loved their daughter, but they weren’t exactly cut out for parenting. They didn’t think that the girl might need constant doting or attention, because that’s certainly not how they were raised. They’d seen as much of their schoolteachers and housekeepers as they’d ever seen of their parents, and they turned out alright. So it was decided that, from a very early age, Amelia would be sent away to the best possible boarding schools in Europe. She did some years in France, some in England, some in Spain, and it made of her a very worldy and well-rounded young girl. When Amelia was thirteen, her mother died suddenly of an ailment she’d contracted while adventuring. Her death sent Amelia’s father into a fit of depression. He became addicted to morphine and liquor, he railed against the world and he let a hatred for his own daughter boil up inside of his soul. For him, Amelia’s presence was nothing more than a reminder of his dead wife. It seems awful, but one can understand how he felt stronger for the mother than the child. After all, he’d hardly spent any time with this young woman now thrust into his care. So he decided that he was no longer capable of taking care of the girl and Amelia was sent to live with her grandfather, her mother’s father. Amelia’s grandfather had been a decorated soldier in the French army who had eventually retired to take up a life of adventure. So at thirteen, Amelia gave up the life of boarding schools and girlish tropes and instead went out to see the world with her grandfather. The man had a tough, stoic exterior and he was never what one would call easy on the girl, but it was obvious that he cared for her a great deal and that his life was better for having her in it. See, he had lost his own wife some years before and the years since had been filled with a vast loneliness. His vibrant and eager young granddaughter now helped to ease that loneliness and he rewarded her by teaching her anything and everything he could. Amelia learned to appreciate fine foods and wines, she learned how to sing old folks songs and dance the night away, she learned to hunt, fish, track and shoot, and she cherished every second of it. The time she spent with her grandfather was the happiest of her life. Because of her unique experience with various locales throughout the world, Amelia is the team’s specialist on international affairs and etiquette. She is also quite possibly the most dangerous person in the world with a firearm. A woman in a man’s world, Amelia works and fights twice as hard to prove herself. She is as rough and stoic as her grandfather but as beautiful and full of life as her mother was. Amelia has assumed the role of leader in the small group.

#12 – Thunderclap

| November 12, 2011 | 0 Comments

Shauna Jacobs, codename Thunderclap, 31. Shauna’s the powerhouse of her team and a single mother of two darling children. With a bit of a wild streak, she’s seen a lot of the world and done a lot with her life already – ask her for stories about the Peace Corps – but if it seems like having kids would make a super settle down, Shauna sees things with a new resolve. She was a dangerous hero before, but now she has something to defend, and she is positively fearsome. Funny, strong, warm and occasionally short-sighted, she’s Mercy’s best friend and spoke up for her when she wanted to rejoin the team without powers. Shauna’s powers include pressure control and the mom stare. You know the one I’m talking about.

#11 Whisper

| November 12, 2011 | 6 Comments

I noticed that I had far too many male characters and so I thought I’d switch it up. Her name is Whisper and yes, she has a striking resemblance to the Sinister Smoke and that is because she is his sister and the only family he has left. When Smoke defected from the Animal Elite, he thought that his sister would join in his fight to destroy the Elite instead she sided against him thinking that he’d gone mad with power. Heartbroken, Whisper believes that there is still good in her brother and hopes that one day he will return to her the man he used to be.

As for Whisper, she is one of the Elite’s prized agents–a founding member(with her brother). She is called Whisper because she practically invented the term, stealth mode. She is always the first agent on the scene of a mission because she can survey the area undetected. She’s a bad ass.

#12 – Jack Dempsey – Actor, Martial Actor

Don "The Dragon" Wilson

Don "The Dragon" Wilson

Jack Dempsey was the last of the great actors of 2026. His dashing smile and trademark Kung-Fu made him the action hero other actors wanted to be for more than a decade. His star as an action hero finally lost its luster in the last series of movies he made, Planet Raiders III: The Unforsaken. The movie, while grossing well, barely covered the production costs, and the injuries incurred by Jack’s drinking problem caused his agent and the company Screen Brothers to finally drop his contact.

“We love you, Jack, but we’re gonna have to let you go. There is a new wind blowing and it’s AI-CGI,” his agent Florence Butterman told him over the vidcam. He was sitting in his Malibu home drinking his morning Mai Tai and nursing yesterday’s hangover.

“You are not serious. That stuff they do with computers and factors?” Demsey had a bit of a slur going already. Florence just grimaced and tried to ignore it. “Damn fake actors…”

“They are not fake actors. They are based on real people who used to be actors. Many of the screen tests have been quite favorable and several hundred movies were released straight to the ‘Net from Nollywood and Ballywood. If we want to keep up we have to do our part to stay with the times. Those Nigerians are eating our lunch in southern Africa and they have already expanded into the South American markets. I’m sorry, Jack, the margins are just too tight nowadays for living actors.” Florence looked down at her watch.

“What, you got someplace to be? You too busy for the man who made you rich? Everything you have in that house, I bought you, Florence. How can you be thinking about turning your back on me? What about helping me out? Can you farm me out to one of your friends over at Light Industrial Films? I heard through the ‘vine they are still planning on making movies with real actors.” Jack downed the rest of his drink and nodded to his butler to bring him another one. The butler winced and then moved on reluctantly to bring another. There was, however, no reason to rush.

“Look, Jack, I am not blowing you off. I will be putting in a word for you, but I would not get my hopes up with Light Industrial Films.  They are still going to be making movies with actors, but they are going to be working in the mountains of Tibet, telling the stories of the remaining survivors of the Great Purge of Tibet in 2016. That’s going to be done on location with local actors. I might be able to get you a role on the Chinese side as a consultant or as a white who worked as a servant to the Chinese.”

“A slave? That is the best hope you can give me? A slave in a Chinese melodrama? You got to be kidding me. You know what, Florence? I don’t want your goddamn pity. I don’t need you. I’m Jack fucking Dempsey, the best thing to happen to Hollywood since Clint Eastwood. I’ll be all right.” Jack stood up and pointed at the monitor. “When I make my comeback, you remember it was me who told you it would happen.”

Having stood up too quickly after having twelve Mai Tais before breakfast, Jack Dempsey fell to the floor unconscious. Florence Butterman shook her head, watched the butler throw back the Mai Tai and signed off. She did not think about Jack Dempsey again until the Academy Awards mentioned his name seven years later.

“And the nominations for Best Actor in a Science Fiction Film are: Kren Davis in Sundiver’s Six, Kazuo Koke in Inner Space, and Jack Dempsey in Planet Raiders: Neutron Star. No, no, folks, I’m just kidding. You know scifi hasn’t paid an actor in years. The award will go to the company that has created the most awesome representation of these amazing actors in their AI-CGI movies created completely on computer. I mean, can anyone remember the last time anyone saw that drunken bum, Jack Dempsey?”

The theater explodes in laughter, that long mean laughter when you are talking about someone behind his back. The laughter that comes from an uncomfortable position that you know you might find yourself in, akin to being in the bathroom without toilet paper. The doors fly open from the side of the stage and Jack Dempsey staggers onto the stage. A security guard with a swollen eye tries to stop him and is returned back stage with a sound kick.

“How’s that?” was picked up from the mikes all over the stage. “Real enough for you? You might want to put some ice on that. So how is everybody? Go on, open that envelope. No, let me.” Jack snatches the envelope from the comedian who stands shocked and quiet on the stage.

“The Award for Best Actor in a Science Fiction Film goes to… Factor Jack Dempsey. Factor Jack Dempsey can’t be here to get his award, cause he was made on a damn computer, so Jack Dempsey is going to take that award for him.” The young woman who carried out the statuette hands it to Jack and scurries off the stage.

The director continues to move the cameras around and film everything as if this was expected. “Since I am here to take my award from my factor, yes, FAKE ACTOR, I think I should say a few words. All you people sitting out there laughing at me, thinking you are better than me won’t have to worry about this because you can really act.  You can kiss my ass.” A collective gasp sweeps the room.

Jack reaches into his jacket and pulls out a flask, takes a hit and continues. “Once upon a time, I was just like you, thought I was something, on the top of my game and nothing could ever touch me. I had a great time, spent my money, partied all day and all night. I made twenty movies in my career and most sucked. I know that, now. I watched them when I was living in the streets, sitting outside of Electronic Huts playing my movies while I panhandled.”

Jack looks down and pauses for a second. “I realized I got paid because it was what people wanted to see, not because I was any good. I got ahead of myself and didn’t pay attention when I needed to. I did not see the world changing around me. I signed contracts without reading them. And all of you did too. Because if you hadn’t, you would not be sitting here today.”

Three security guards came to the edge of the stage and hesitantly began to make their approach. None of them were in a hurry to tackle Jack Dempsey because while he may have been an actor, he did his own martial arts movies, and those were not stunts. Many a stunt double went to the hospital, and the tabloids loved talking about it. He waved at them and made the sign for two minutes, and they retreated to the edge of the stage.

“I just wanted to say to Florence Butterman, I am sorry I didn’t listen to you when you told me to read everything. You told me that the industry would take advantage of my stupidity. You see, I don’t have anyone to blame about Factor Jack Dempsey. In my contracts, I made it possible for him to exist. In my contracts, I signed away my likeness to be used in any kind of AI-CGI based movie for the next twenty years. And they do not have to pay me anything because I did not read the contract well enough.” His voice was bitter and sharp.

“But the best part is that I had time on my hands and more than a few favors. I know that almost none of you read your contracts, either. So when you lose your mind, or piss someone off, or when they get tired of you getting old or weak or crotchety, they will replace you with a factor, too. So, you guys enjoy your awards.  One day there won’t be anyone in the theater to accept one, unless they can teach a computer to walk, too. Y’all have a good night. Come on, boys, I haven’t got all night.”

It took twenty security guards before Jack Dempsey was dragged off stage. The Academy Awards had never had higher numbers.

This story appears in Hayward’s Reach, an anthology of short stories, published in November 2011.

Don “The Dragon” Wilson was not an inspiration for this story directly. I had written the story before I discovered his history and it seemed to be a perfect match for my story. He has a great history as an actor and fighter but most people can’t remember a single movie he appears in, even though those movies themselves are famous.

Deputy Batgirl

Outlaws in the badlands of the wild west whisper of a blood-drinking cave beast that creeps in the night and abducts the unwary. The truth is this bat is no blood-drinker, (that would be her South American cousin), but she does hunt the night, leaping down in the dark upon any unlucky varmint who dares ignore the laws of the west.

#12 – Myth

| November 12, 2011 | 0 Comments

Character 12, Myth. Now this is a complete redesign from the very earliest sketches of Myth, done by Drew Johnson. The original design was a little more operatic and a touch cheesecakey – something I’m not that into.

Drew took the idea of the combined mythologies and ran with it, designing someone who looks like a Norse goddess raised by Greek gods before being banished to Earth!

#12: Carpathia

| November 12, 2011 | 0 Comments

Real Name: Unknown

Age: Unknown

Height: 5’8

Weight: 135 lbs

Powers: Sorceress, mystical in nature

Character info: About 11 years ago, when I considered starting my own comic, I started brainstorming SEVERAL names for characters, heroes and villains. Some of the characters I’ve already posted had names born out of that session (Rock Solid, Black Ice, Simoom, Esperance). Carpathia was one of these names. I had no idea who she would be or what she would look like. At one point, I gave her a goth appearance and she had fire powers; this later became my character Risk in The Adventurers of Liberty City. However, I still held onto the name. When I revived Carpathia for this challenge, I immediately knew I wanted to keep her dark in nature, but making her a villain this time. I started to picture something that looked like a cross between Vampira and something that Humberto Ramos would have put into his “Crimson” comic. However, she’s not a vampire, but an evil sorceress. I’m already really liking her and can’t wait to “debut” her in a book!
