Day 5 – Samurai Tiger

| November 6, 2013 | 0 Comments

day 5 Sanuurai tigerI sketched this guy out while sitting in the doctor’s waiting room today = plenty of time to kill. I think I love drawing anthropomorphs more than anything else. I know things like this have been done before but one of those ideas I had to explore as I love Japanese armor and culture, the bushido way.

Characters 21-30/30 (Mission Complete!!)

| November 30, 2012 | 0 Comments

21/30 – Amelia. She’s a ghost!

22/30 – Blech. Another WTF creature.

23/30 – Righteous Slaughter. A true founding father of this great nation.

24/30 – Avenging Pequot Warrior. In honor of the 700 massacred Pequot Native Americans.

25/30 – Slugger. He punches things. In space.

26/30 – Fluffy the Pirate. Named after one of my PAX Enforcer brothers, I mostly just wanted to draw a pirate with a Lemmy.

27/30 – Artslinger. This is the front turnaround for another contest, but I drew it in November, so whatever. Think having powers like Green Lantern, but through art supplies.

28/30 – The Scholar. Ended up looking like Gordon Freeman. Unintentional.

29/30 – Tengu. I didn’t draw any anthropomorphic creatures for this thing. Not my bag, really. Still, gotta cover all the bases.

30/30 – s133pDEAD! Okay, so it’s kind of a cop out, but I’m super stoked to have completed this challenge and also my beard deserves to be immortalized!

Had the inspiration to do a wandering ronin type character whilst watching 13 Assassins last night. Variation of the name, “Toshiro,” in honor of The Man, aka Toshiro Mifune (he’s not in the movie, obvi). This one was really, really quick and inked it with straight ink and brush, no washes. Come to think of it, I’ve been so busy and crazy playing catch up, I haven’t done a proper line art/wash piece for this project yet. We’ll see if I get there.

No. 29 & 30- Samurai Werewolf and Ghost Witch

| November 30, 2011 | 0 Comments

Short Background: A young arrogant samurai came across an unattractive old woman who asked for his help. She claimed that she was robbed by ninjas and needed his assistance, he ignored her pleas for help. Instead, he mocked her dirty clothes and compared her face to that of a dog’s. Unfortunately, the old woman turned out to be a witch. As punishment for his arrogance, she cursed him to walk the roads with wolf-like features. She sent him off on a quest to retrieve what was stolen from her with the promise of restoring him.

Several years went by and after fighting several ninjas, a pair of twin warlocks, and a three headed dragon, the arrogant young warrior returned a humble yet battle hardened samurai. However, it turned out that in his absence, the witch was killed by assassin’s sent by a rival witch. Now, with the help of the witch’s spirit, the furry warrior must complete one more quest. He has to find the rival witch, kill her, and retrieve several of the witch’s scroll in order to reverse the curse.

It looks like he may have another long road ahead of him.

#22 Mr. Daruma

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

Among the truckers, there is talk of an old man. They call him Mr. Daruma, on account of the large daruma statue he carries around with him. He walks along secluded bits of highway, waiting on trucks to pass. When he sees one, he extends his thumb, hoping to catch a ride. If asked where he’s going, he will remain perfectly silent, signaling for them to simply go ahead. He’ll ride with them for miles & miles, not saying a word. Eventually, when the trucker’s guard is down, they will look over & see no one there.

This story has prevailed for years. Everyone knows someone that knows someone who helped Mr. Daruma along, but no one directly. No one knows if he’s human or some kind of spirit. It is widely believed though, that crossing paths with him will result in tremendous luck. So if you see a little old man out along the road, don’t hesitate.

—-

Got the idea for him while I was typing up the spiel on #15, #16, & #17, & just decided to bust him out right quick. He lives in the same world of trucker samurais. I might even make it so he wears the daruma on his head, but I like the scrunched up old man face. Should’ve spent a little more time thinking about the rest of his get up but I was going with an old depression era dustbowl drifter meets sensei look. Ultimately, I think giving that story a kind of traditional Japanese Supernatural edge might be pretty cool. Or lame. Gotta keep working on it to see.

Growing up without a father, he turned to gang for support and took on the name of “Cool Whip.” He hated taking orders, however, so when he was 16 he got into a fight with the gang leader over control. The leader and six other gang members all ganged up on him, beat him bloody and left him for dead in a dumpster. He died, and while his soul was in limbo the Devil spoke to him, offering him a deal. He was returned to Earth, whereupon he went home and strangled his helpless grandmother. The murder of the innocent fulfilled his pact, and he was rewarded with his powers and a sword forged in the fires of Hell. He then proceeded to slaughter the members of his former gang and recruit members for a new one.

Day #1
My first upload of the 30 characters for the month of November 2010. My intention is to create a new character on the daily basis. Always coming up with something new and keeping it in a tight pencil drawing format. I feel very comfortable with the pencil and maybe develop a character in the future in color for a story.
These illustrations are my creative ideas on the spot, without any planning of what I will draw tomorrow. I’m trying to keep it fresh and innovative.

Free the mind and let the pencil do all the work without any limitations. Kinda like jack Kerouac’s “On The Road”
