Day 1: Ella Louise “Eli” Brandon

| November 1, 2011 | 2 Comments

curvy crimefighter

Real name: Ella Louise Brandon
Nickname: Eli
Superhero name: as yet undecided
Age: late teens/early twenties
Race: African-American

Student by day

Eli lost her single-mother at a young age when the woman was caught in a crossfire between a super-villain and a superhero.
Her mother died as a result of a poison gas attack and while the poison killed the woman, the later interaction between her mother and Eli lead to the girl getting a second-hand dose of the poison. It would lead to Eli’s superhuman powers of the ability to control plants, their movements and growth speeds.
After her mother died, Eli was raised by her then-alcoholic grandmother, who soon gave up the drink to be a better role model for her granddaughter.

Seeing the rampant crime around her constantly, Eli decided that because she had the ability she should do what she could to stop the violence.

Eli is relatively young and works alone, with no one to guide her. This leads to several rash and regrettable decisions in her adventures.
She refuses to give up though, trying to learn from each mistake.

#1: Hedgehog

| November 1, 2011 | 5 Comments

(Sorry, don’t draw. Enjoy this instead.)

Name: Hector Espino
Known Aliases: Hedgehog, Thorn
Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown
Height: 5’10
Weight: 173 pounds (unaltered,) 211 pounds (with powers in full use)

Bio: Born January 8th, 1983 to a pair of El Salvadorean immigrants. The third of four children, Hector grew up in a disadvantaged home in southern California. His grades remained above average throughout his education, although disciplinary action was taken against him for fighting in ten of the twelve years of his schooling.

Once he graduated, Hector joined the United States armed forces and was deployed for a tour of duty in Afghanistan. He won both several citations for insubordination and two Purple Hearts, as well as a Silver Star for saving two injured comrades who were caught in the line of fire.

In 2002, an electrical fire burned down his childhood home, killing both of his parents. Hector was not able to attend their funeral. Once his tour ended, in 2003, Hector returned to California and got work with his eldest brother Manuel.

It was at this point Hector was deemed a suitable candidate for Operation: At the Gates. He was approached with an offer on May 2nd, 2004. He accepted with little argument.

Hector was taken to the San Antonio base, where he was subjected to a battery of tests. The test was a success, and Hector was codenamed “Hedgehog Patient 1”,  for no patient had ever manifested abilities quite like his before.

Hector has remained in the service of the Task Force since the test succeeded in 2004. List of his missions and achievements are as follows:

[The next several pages of the file have been torn out.]

…citations for insubordination, including arguments with officers of the task force.

Powers: Hector can manifest organic spikes anywhere on his body. He may do so through serious concentration, and the more time he has to prepare, the more spikes he can generate.  The spikes are almost as hard as diamonds and razor sharp, allowing Hector to puncture holes in nearly anything he touches.

The spikes also have energy absorbing principles. Test show that, with the spikes deployed, Hector can withstand concussive forces that would cripple or kill an unaltered human. As he becomes more versed in their use, Hector has become progressively better at deploying the spikes. One of his preferred techniques is sticking his palm on an opponent’s forehead, then deploying as many spikes as he can on his palm.

Gorillanaut Champion of the Cosmos!

This is the story of the first Gorilla launched into outer space in the American space program.

He was born on June 17th, 1956  in  Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. He was captured by animal trappers and sent to a sideshow in Coney Island New York.  Three years later he was purchased by the United States Air Force and brought to the   Holloman Air Force Base Aeronautical Research Facility or H.A.F.B.A.R.F  in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Researchers started with a group of 29 chimps and 1 Gorilla as primate flight candidates at H.A.F.B.A.R.F After a series of intensive tests the gorilla beat out the chimps and began training for his space mission.

Beginning in July 1959, the three-year-old Gorilla was trained at  H.A.F.B.A.R.F to do  timed tasks in response to electric lights. In his pre-flight training, Gorillanaut was taught to push a button within two seconds of seeing a flashing red light; failure to do so would result in  punishment in the form of a mild electric shock to his testicles. A correct response earned him a chocolate covered frozen banana from a hi-tech dispenser.

On January 31, 1961, Gorillanaut secured a position in Project Mercury Mission X-2 and was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida on a  flight beyond the Van Ellen Belt to test radiation levels. The capsule was bombarded with massive doses of gamma rays and suffered a partial loss of the life support system and a fried  communication panel during the flight. Luckily Gorillanaut’s space suit prevented him from suffering any harm.

The gamma rays broke the banana dispenser causing the entire stock of now gamma radiated frozen bananas to fall out.  Sadly, Gorillanaut was so busy gobbling up six cases of bananas that he didn’t  notice the flashing red light and missed his cue to push the control button.  The space capsule bounced off the Earth’s atmosphere upon attempting re-entry and was hurled off into space.

Gorillanaut passed out after gorging himself with bananas. The damaged life support system put him into a state of suspended animation and for the next 50 years he drifted through deep space until his capsule finally orbited back to Earth in 2011 and crashed into the Kardashian’s house killing everyone inside.

As a result of eating gamma radiated frozen bananas Gorillanaut woke up with super intelligence and the ability to speak. He was hailed a hero and has since returned to adventuring in space as….

#1 Wind-Girl

No, not flatulance issues.

When I told my daughter about the challenge, this was the first one she came up with.

Wind Girl has the power of the elements including wind, rain, fog and lightning!

She also has a wind assisted punching skill.

In Kiara’s words:

“Wind-Girl can fly using the wind and punch the bad guys really hard! She then zaps them with lightning and escapes in the fog!”

2011 Challenger: Eric White

| October 23, 2011 | 2 Comments

That's me!! (well...sort of)

Hello everyone!! Eric White here having a go at my 3rd year of the 30 Characters challenge.  I have yet to make it through all 30 days but I’m determined to give THIS year my best effort yet.

Like any good comic book fan who has some aspirations to draw comics…I’ve created a million superhero beings in my life.  Instead of making 30 more of my style of characters (which are mostly superman & spiderman clones) I decided to try something different.  I took one of  my favorite games, Heroes Unlimited, and rolled up the 30 character types and the powers that accompany them.  No character details, history or drawings…just the type and powers.  I used all the rules provided by the book for character creation (beginning from what type of character to create all the way through the process).  ALL rolls were actual and true.

Here is the rolled information for the character which I will draw for Day 1.  If you’re familiar with the Heroes system or are a geek (which…lets be honest…if you’re reading this you probably are a geek) you’ll understand what all of that stuff means.

Power Category: Experiment – Chem & Rad – experiment that can not be replicated
Education Level: 3 years of college
# of Powers – 5 minor
Side Effect: Super Hairy
Experiment Sponsor: Military
Status with Sponsor: Allowed to leave peacefully

Powers:
Extraordinary physical prowess
Heightened Sense of Taste
Energy Expulsion: Electrical Field
Flight: Glide
Heightened Sense of Smell

You may be asking…why did I do all of this work before hand? For one simple reason: I love role playing games and this whole character creation process and because of that I basically re-read the whole book. Once I decided to use this approach for character creation I knew it was going to take me forever. And I was right!! Rolling all 30 characters alone took me something like two weeks worth of evening to complete.  Every roll meant flipping pages and reading paragraph after paragraph…and I loved it! So much fun!!! Incidentally…if there are any people or groups in the Omaha area that are playing RPG and are looking for a new member…it would be kind of ok to let me know!)
So we’ll see what comes of all of this.  I’m looking forward to an exciting month of creativity.  I hope you’ll all follow along and have as much fun as I’m planning on having.
NOTE: this is a truncated version of my original introductory post.  I wrote a highly over worded (and very cathartic) post about my 30 characters experience to this point.  However, I decided that instead of subjecting 30 Characters to that hot mess I would post the wordy bits over on my site, www.geekywhiteguy.com, and just the most important stuff here.  More than likely I’ll be doing that through the entire month of 30 Characters.  The drawing and a little information on this site…and a FULL, bloviated post on my site.  With over 260 participants signed up for this challenge and hundreds of people viewing the site every day I don’t see and point in cluttering up this site with all my ramblings.  So if you want to read my full post…go see my site now.

#13 Hero

| November 20, 2010 | 0 Comments

The Hero is one of the few superheroes without an alter-ego.  His identity is completely consumed by his role as a savior of humankind, and because he has no way of hiding who he is, it is impossible for him to show his face to anyone whenever he’s not saving the world.  The Hero spends the hours while he is not saving the world in a dark, solitary place and is perpetually alone even when he is surrounded by others.

#11 Roskus “Sunrise” Miller

| November 14, 2010 | 0 Comments

Name: Roskus “Sunrise” Miller
Species: Human
Age/Sex/Race: 19/Male/White
Main Goal: Fame, Fortune, Fighting
Occupation: Superhero
Motivation: Testosterone/Poverty/Boredom
Inner Need: Excitement
Flaw: Rash, Stubborn, Violent
Good/Bad Habits: Gets his buck every year, does poorly in school, gets into fights very frequently
Secret: His powers and those of his cousin Haley, also that he has a crush on Haley
Skills, Knowledge, Props: Knows how to hunt, fish, and is a decent mechanic, also has extremely powerful but extremely short ranged psychic powers, mostly used to power his punches and kicks, to allow him to leap great heights, and to deflect projectiles.
Quirks: Always wears hunting boots or some other camoflauge article.
Attitude: Cocky
Dialogue Style: Fast, loose, thick southern drawl
Backstory/Description: Roskus was an only child of a mechanic, living in the same trailer park as his cousin Haley. He would always pick fights with whoever would fight with him. During one particularly close fight, when four other guys ganged up on him, he discovered his psychic powers and used them to great effect to win the fight, breaking a few of their bones in the process. Naturally, the only course of action was to become a superhero, and when he saw a wap kid wearing a rising sun hoodie, beat him up and stole it from him, he decided on the moniker of “Sunrise.”

Ahh! Four days behind! Jeez, I’ve been busy lately, hence the poor quality. This one’s related to this one (http://www.30characters.com/2010/11/10/10-haley-midnight-blaire/).

#10 Haley “Midnight” Blaire

| November 10, 2010 | 0 Comments

Name: Haley “Midnight” Blaire
Species: Human
Age/Sex/Race: 14/Female/White
Main Goal: Get a job as a nurse and get out of her hometown.
Occupation: None/Superhero
Motivation: Fear/Self Interest
Inner Need: Safety
Flaw: Cowardly and will do anything to save herself
Good/Bad Habits: Does all her chores and studies well, but is too afraid to say something that might offend someone, even if they totally deserve it.
Secret: Her powers and those of her cousin Roskus and the fact that some of her male family members have been making sexual advances on her.
Skills, Knowledge, Props: Has psychic powers like flight, telekinesis, telepathy, invisibility, ESP, and teleportation, but they all come and go sporadically. Very good at housework like cooking, cleaning, sewing, etc.
Quirks: Keeps a can of pepper spray on her person, despite her powers.
Attitude: Shy
Dialogue Style: Quiet, slow, thick Southern drawl.
Backstory/Description: Haley Blaire was the youngest of four children growing up in a trailer park to two redneck parents. The four children were always responsible for all of the housework around the family’s trailer, but Haley usually ended up doing most of it due to her shy, submissive personality. When she started to develop, several male members of her family, cousins mostly, began to make sexual comments and advances on her. She resisted by becoming even more withdrawn. Fortunately for her, when she was fourteen she discovered that some combination of poor breeding, polluted water, and pure dumb luck had given her psychic powers. She kept them a secret until her mind reading powers allowed her to sense that one of her cousins, Roskus Miller, was similarly gifted. She told him her secret, and at his urging agreed to join him in becoming super heroes, taking on the name of “Midnight.”

Yeah, this was the third “catch up” picture I did, so it’s kind of sloppy (sloppier, rather). I’ll probably do her cousin/partner tomorrow.

Day# 08 the POISON PENN

#08 the Poison Penn by Jande Rowe

My first ever Super-hero-type Villain. :`)

Jhorn’l Ag’Penn hails from a religious colony of Grythf’ah‘s (Worshippers of Agh) on a nondescript planet circling a small red giant in the sparser areas near the Rim of the Galaxy.

Like most religious fanatics, the beliefs of the Grythf’ah brook no quarter with any other religious practices. Sure in their divine arrogance, they send out their most devout acolytes to bring word to the heathens (that’s the rest of us).

Jhorn’l is no slouch when it comes to converting the unenlightened. At some point he became convinced that he was doing Agh’s work; he was Agh’s Right Hand in this world to help others to the next. And of course what better way than to first test them, then when, er… if they fail, show them the error of their ways with a little  fear of Agh, and a little Holy Poison to help them on their way into the Light of Agh’s Truth.

When did that happen? Oh, perhaps around the time Jhorn’l found a derelict ship full of humanity’s bones, and many useful artifacts, including some Golden Age comics from DC and Marvel. Of course he couldn’t read them, but being the vain and contemptuous being he was, he delighted in the idea of Spandex to match his particularly bright and beautiful green skin.

‘Twas then that he hit upon his Master Plan to weed out the Unworthy, and deliver the Holy Message of his Holyness, Agh! At this point he underwent Grimstolaet, changing himself from the inside out and donning his new Spandex, took upon himself the Holy Name of Poison Penn, the Right Hand of Agh.

All over the Galactic Rim he sped enticing the weak to evil, putting the fear of Agh into all those who succumbed with poison pen letters, then blackmailing them in the name of the Holy Church of Agh, (in order to defray costs), and finally when they refuse to repent, descending on them in a poisonous cloud and stabbing them to death with his poison-tipped spear-pen, while chanting the one thousand four hundred and fifty-three names of Agh.

Of course sooner or later he would run into our Dysfunctional Duo, Wheeler and Ikey. And so its possible that even Prima will have her hands full  trying to rescue Wheeler and Co in order to bring them to Justice, while the Poison Penn is trying his best to bring them to Agh.

Enjoy!

#2. Soul Sister

Soul Sister

Voodoo Super-Killer Extraordinaire

Ayesha St. Croix only ever wanted to be like her big sister Ayana. Like her late mother before her, Ayana was chosen to lead her close-knit Haitian village as the High Priestess, and was gifted with her mother’s mystical abilities. Ayesha was always jealous of the favored Ayana, and struck a deal with a demon to take her sister’s powers for herself. The pact worked—Ayesha gained mastery over the living and the dead, as well as intimate knowledge of universal secrets. The transfer also happened to kill Ayana, which Ayesha had hoped to avoid. She is now forever haunted by her actions, and the voices of the dead will never let her rest. She now travels the globe, seeking redemption for her sins and meting out the judgment of the wicked.

But it’s not all misery and torment–Ayesha now possesses some powerful abilities. She is able to sense the supernatural, from demons and ghosts to the auras of a person’s soul. She can speak to the dead (and undead) and bid them to do as she commands. Her hellfire bolts are effective against living enemies, but her rather large and jagged knife is pretty effective, too.

#1 Dan Slade is… The STEEL F.I.S.T.

| November 1, 2010 | 7 Comments

Just wanted to briefly say that I’m super-psyched for the 30CC!

I settled on a Public Domain Superhero called THE STEEL FIST for my 1st character. I love these public domain characters and I thought let’s give him a remodel.

Daniel Slade is an International playboy and gambler by day. He is also a commander and top agent of F.I.S.T.: a global secret agency dedicated to bringing high-tech justice to evildoers and crime syndicates who would undermine our shiny plastic democracies! Dan is seemingly felled by diabolical minions of DIRECTOR: GOLGOTHA and his JET HARPIES- crashing his private party jet into Mt. Vesuvius while attempting “The STARDUSTER IMPERATIVE”, saving Italy from destruction. F.I.S.T. technocrats save the near-dead Slade and rebuild him with the most futuristic limb/organ cloning and cyborg technology known in the year 1976! Now equipped with his Atomic-Steeloidinium Cyborgarm, and other improvements, Dan Slade is… The STEEL F.I.S.T.!

Sunday Jones

Sunday Jones, in the guise of 'Knockout'
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Sunday Jones. Yes, that’s her real name. Parents can be cruel sometimes. Sunday was mugged on the way to university one morning and woke to find herself in a world she could alter seemingly on a whim. All she has to do to make changes to the fundamental structures of reality is draw the effect she wants to have as a comic and upload it to the Internet. The effects are mostly permanent; only thing she can’t change for good is herself.

You see her here in the guise of ‘Knockout’, the superhero persona she often dons in order to fight crime. She has other guises, but this is the most common.

In terms of the art for this one, I’m mostly pleased with the overall look and the colour scheme. My major issue is with the general proportions, the legs and the feet. I’m going to have to really work hard at improving my ability to draw legs, that’s for certain. Still, with 29 more characters to go perhaps the last one will look vaguely like a human? Providing the last one is supposed to look like a human, that is.

Day #1
My first upload of the 30 characters for the month of November 2010. My intention is to create a new character on the daily basis. Always coming up with something new and keeping it in a tight pencil drawing format. I feel very comfortable with the pencil and maybe develop a character in the future in color for a story.
These illustrations are my creative ideas on the spot, without any planning of what I will draw tomorrow. I’m trying to keep it fresh and innovative.

Free the mind and let the pencil do all the work without any limitations. Kinda like jack Kerouac’s “On The Road”
