#5 Darius Braken.

| November 5, 2012 | 0 Comments

The Darkwood glen is said to be a god-forsaken place to dwell in. Haunted by long since dead spirits and things even worse still. However legend tells of a great and precious crystal that only forms in a cave at the very heart of the glen, a crystal that has many wonderful and magnificent properties.

It is this legend that sees hundreds of adventurers; thieves and mercenaries enter the glen everyday in such of the fabled crystals. Most never return, the few who do are never the same. They return with haunted eyes and tales of creatures born of men and beast that guard the glen from any who trespass.

Darius Braken is one of these ‘creatures’ in trust he is but a man, like all of the Glen Guards, they are the sworn protectors of the crystal cave and their small community that lives in and around it.

The Guard know the glen better than any man or creature to walk the earth and can come from any shadow or corner of the great wood. The glen guard all wear the fur and scales of the beasts that dwell with them in their woodland home. Most forge helms with antlers or horns to add to the fearsome look of their armour. Darius wears the fur of a giant wolf as a cloak, the scales of a tree drake as mailed armour and the antlers of a rock stag a top his helm. He is one of the oldest and most respected guards amongst his village and one of the most feared and talked of ‘creatures’ by the few men who have escaped him.

#4 Arthor Penn.

| November 4, 2012 | 0 Comments

Arthor was a scrawny boy of ten, with dirty blonde hair and bright green eyes, he looked no different from any other ten year old, but Arthor was mature for a boy of ten. He had had to grow up fast after his father had passed away. He had loved his father more than he would ever be able to show.

Arthor remembered the nights when his dad would come and tell him all the wonderful stories he had been writing for his latest book. The tales of beasts and brave men, of the battles they fought over magical objects and beautiful princesses, these stories had always filled his mind and heart with such wonder.

Now that his dad was gone nothing seemed quite as bright or brilliant as it once had.

Arthor loved to spend time just sitting in his dads study now, sitting crossed legged in the huge leather chair his dad had spent so many hours in. Arthor would let the chair surround him and protect him, as he looked at the rows of old books that lined the walls. It was the one place Arthor felt close to his father. All the stories flooded back to him here.

It was on one of these days on a cold and rainy November when young Arthor Penn found his fathers favorite writing pen. It was a beautiful fountain pen, it looked black from far away but up close had the look of dark purple marble to it. The nib of the pen was a beautiful burnt copper tone that had warmth to it like an open fire on a dark night. From the nib a faint gold pattern spiraled around the pen to its top like a serpent coiling around a branch. As Arthor studied the pen it seemed to glow and draw him in, he placed the lid back over the nib, as it clicked shut the room filled with light.

His eyes opened slowly and he was no longer in his fathers study, nor was he alone. Arthor was now in a cave face to face with a purple dragon.

# 18 : Captain Tobias ” Toby” MacArthur

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

The overseer of Team Zeus, Captain Tobias “Toby” MacArthur.

Before he was commander of Team Zeus, Tobias MacArthur served in the Navy for several years before his first encounter with the paranormal. It occurred while his ship was on port in Morroco, where several of his crew were seduced, driven mad, and killed by the female djinn, Aisha Qandisha. Tobias confronted her after she claimed her latest victim, yet she too, made Tobias the recipient of an oncoming storm of demonic and spiritual entities, until agents from the Loman Organization warded her away and saved Tobias from having his mind broken. The experience resulted in Tobias from being discharged from the Navy due to mental issues, yet “Captain Toby” was determined to prove that he was not mad. Tobias actively sought out the existence of the “Lo-Men” and eventually met with the enigmatic Arthur Loman,

From there, Captain Tobias MacArthur was hired into the Loman Organization as a Field Officer and encountered even more supernatural and preternatural phenomena, including the capture and enrollment of Walter Ramsey. Eventually, Tobias was promoted to the rank of Ship Captain and is one of the first Aerial Captains to command an airship. His ship, The Abraxis, is the Loman Organization’s main mobile command center, and as such, is the first response to any and all threats or conflicts within the supernatural community. This responsibility is one Tobias bears greatly, and the lives of each and everyone of his crew affects him as Tobias never forgot what Aish Qandisha did to his crew mates, and that memory is what propels him to command his crew and bear their pains upon his own.

Abilities: Tobias uses the combined knowledge from both is time in the Navy and in Loman to command his crew and maintain order in his ship. As such, Tobias does not often engage in field operations, unless as a delegate or emissary with the various races and entities that the Loman Organization deals with.

Even so, Tobias still maintains his military exercise regiment and weapons training so that he is still fit and disciplined, even in his old age.

Tobias is a respected and capable commanding officer, as he is able to effortlessly issue commands to his field agents, discuss a pan-dimensional treaty, and conduct a guest lecture without feeling overwhelmed or overburdened with his responsibilities.

Creation: The commanding officer idea was easy, the name was the most imaginative part, as his name comes from a female friends father, who owns his ship and we call him “Captain Toby”.

# 17: Hayden Seer

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

A speedy summoner, Hayden Seer.

Hayden Seer was an aspiring artist in the state of Washington. As a child, Hayden discovered he can make his doodles come to life and be his playmates. These were fairly harmless and were mainly used to entertain himself with, until upon his teens, when preparing for an upcoming gallery, his pictures came to life and ran rampart throughout the gallery. Hayden’s parents, office workers for the the Loman Organization, brought Hayden to the Loman Institute where he would better understand his ability. However, Hayden’s ability is a rare case, as summoners usually make contracts and call forth existing entities, not create them from thin air. This puzzle led many Mages within the Loman Institute to learn from him, yet Hayden is still trying to understand the full extent of his abilities through trial and error and from adapting the current tenants of magic and applying them to his particular form of magic.

As a Mage Agent of Loman, Hayden is a field operative, like Deidra Edelweiss, who employs magic as their primary weapon in combat, yet as a Mage, Hayden also works as a Mage counselor and researcher in studying the arcane arts.

Abilities: Hayden is a specialist in a rare form of summoning magic; where he summons images that are his own creation. As such, Hayden carries around a portfolio book with drawings that he has drawn and summons them via a blood seal offering. The creatures that Hayden summons exist as long as Hayden is willing to offer the blood for their continued existence as size determines the blood offerings, as a larger creature will require more blood and a shorter duration compared to a smaller creature and a longer time limit. As such, Hayden usually keeps his summoned creatures between 90 seconds to 15 minutes summons no more than three creatures, as such any longer or any larger and Hayden begins to feel the effects of blood loss immediately.

Hayden is also proficient in other fields of magic, particular sealing, barrier, and not surprisingly, summoning magic. Hayden also understands tracking magic and light healing magic to cope with blood loss and to heal himself from fatigue. Aside from summoning magic, Hayden is adept at kinetomancy, speed magic, where Hayden accelerates his reflexes so as to be a more evasive target to opponents, add to his combat training, and Hayden is a capable fighter, when not summoning creatures.

Hayden has completed basic small arms and close quarters combat training, so he is capable of hand to hand and using small arms weapons.

Creation: Hayden was one of the first of three characters that came to me in my idea for Loman. It was a dream I was reading or watching a show with these “supernatural agents” where there was an element witch, an art summoner, and a legendary weapons specialist. Hayden was going to be a POV character as he will be introduced to the team around issue two. The name came around just using Hayden and the mythical troupe of a seer. His outfit was modeled after  the dream, where I saw such a robe, yet the detailing is modeled after a manga characters coat I saw. Originally, Hayden’s sketchbook was to be strapped to his back, but I changed it to be more portable and it will be attached to his hip, like a personal firearm. The creatures were going to be based around stylized or exagerrated representations of my own library of characters, so as to make it my own personal Easter Egg of ideas.

#12 Xaiyoi

| November 28, 2011 | 3 Comments

Along the arrid mountain paths of the Silk Road, the Fire Nuns of western deserts were renowned for protecting the caravans with their kung fu. For a small donation to their convent, a pair of nuns would escort merchants to their destination, warding off bandits & raiders with their fiery fighting techniques. In many cases, the nuns would use their pyrokinetic skills to simply scare away adversaries before anyone came to blows. But Xaiyoi was different. She loved to fight. And though it broke with the order’s philosophies, she took an almost sadistic glee in setting wicked people ablaze. The other nuns are starting to get wary of her actions. But she just can’t help herself.

—-

Another Eurasian character. Overall, not super thrilled about this one. I like how the face turned out but that’s about it. The pose is awkward, especially for a martial artists & I think I started rushing this without giving it a lot of love. I mean the get up she’s wearing feels weak. Retroactively, it looks too similar to certain existing characters & there were easy choices I could’ve made to avoid that. And the name is syllables hodgepodged together. It seems to kind of fit the vibe I was looking for, but I always hate doing that kind of thing. Especially when it’s something I’m trying to do with a kind of historical basis.

More to come as I get more time. I’m quite happy with the twofer I’ve got coming up next.

#23 – Lord Clerk Uster

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

In a small kingdom, the day-to-day dealings of the castle are handled by people far less illustrious than the king, who has the far more important job of reigning to do. One of these less important people is Lord Clerk Uster, who knows full well his importance to the running of the kingdom. If the king died, after all, his eldest child would take the throne. There would be pomp and ceremony and mourning, but life would go on more or less as it had before.

If Lord Clerk Uster were to die, however, it would take months, if not years for a proper replacement to be found and for the kingdom to truly regain itself. His intricate, rational method of organizing accounts and the business of the kingdom is something that only he truly understands. He is, to put it simply, all that stands between order and chaos.

Or so he would like to believe, of course. He’s a small, weaselly-looking man, with a nasal voice, a love of proper procedure and – if dictionaries existed yet – would be the dictionary definition of “officious prick.”

His king has charged him with finding a proper suitor for the beautiful and talented Princess Cherin, a girl whom Uster has adored since she was a child. He truly loves her, even though he would never dare admit it even to himself, and this impedes somewhat the search for a proper husband….

#8 George and #9 Specs

| November 26, 2011 | 0 Comments

So now here’s George and Specs. Phew. After this I’m gonna take a break until tomorrow.

George is a jock. He’s popular and athletic, the quarterback of his football team. His girlfriend recently broke up with him because she was getting sick of having every single plan of theirs getting canceled in lieu of football practices or games or having to hang out with his team members. She kicked him out of her locker. He’d never bothered getting his own since he shared hers but he’s forced to now.
George takes football pretty seriously and is hoping to go to college on a sports scholarship. If he gets injured he’d rather hide it and try to work through the pain. He likes to take care of problems as soon as possible so they won’t bother him later. If he can’t take care of them he’ll agressively ignore then instead.

Specs was a girl that died in the same school about 50 years before. She doesn’t remember her real name anymore. Her nickname is a play off of her giant spectacles and the word spectre since she becomes a ghost. Ghosts are pretty uncommon and she’s only one because she unwittingly made a deal with the devil. Ya see, when she died, she didn’t really want to acknowledge the fact. She turned away from the light and in the opposite direction was not the physical world again but a mysterious figure. He told her that he was an angel that could bring her back to Earth if only she would promise him something. She said yes without thinking and he informed her the promise was that, since she didn’t want to give her soul up, she would have to take another in exchange. She then came back as a ghost, haunting her old locker (she can also haunt the lock) She was horrified at what she had promised to and decided to just hide in the locker and never come out. Unfortunately the ‘angel’ has grown impatient and is demanding she give him a soul soon or he’ll take hers now. She doesn’t want either to happen.

Specs appears to George (and only George) as soon as he’s assigned the locker and, even though she doesn’t even know if he can help, pleads for it. This seems like a problem that’s definitely out of his league so he tries to ignore the whole thing. However it turns out that she is involuntarily taking his life and energy anyway with every interaction. He can’t ignore this anymore and they both try to figure out a solution before he out and out dies.
George is frustrated and angry that this ghost girl has invaded his very happy life. He grows worse and worse at football and his teammates are startung to think he’s going crazy, talking to his lock and all.

#7 Sybil

| November 26, 2011 | 0 Comments

#7 is a hamadryad named Sybil (hamadryad meaning that she dies if her tree does). She is an evergreen tree born in Canada around the 1960’s. She was bored being in basically the middle-of-nowhere and, after hearing so much about it from other trees (they have a rather large network) decided to dig up her tree and replant it in Central Park. She was a bit of an outcast among the other trees at first but because she was very friendly and told them strange tales of such a faraway place, she became very popular. She loves to gossip and also adores the hustle and bustle of the new, high technology place that is NYC. The only time she isn’t walking about the city is Christmastime. So many cut down evergreens…
Alcina came across her one day, deeply puzzled at what an evergreen was doing among plane trees. Sybil told her story and now the two are good friends. Although Sybil is generally more hyper about everything, she is laid back about the issues that Alcina loves so much.

#20 – The Antlered Macaw

| November 24, 2011 | 0 Comments

Ah, the extremely rare antlered macaw…
First described by Sir Archibalderdash Higgs in 1836.
Often frequents Japanese bath-houses, which are hard to find in the Amazon. Its cry sounds like a microwave’s buzz, and it smells vaguely of sweat and figs. It lays two eggs per clutch, one of which is always blue. The blue one is inevitably devoured by predators, owing to its conspicuous color, so no one knows if the blue egg is fertile. No antlered macaws have ever been successfully raised in captivity.
Squaaawk!

#22 – Rissandir den Raud

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Rissandir den Raud is a prince of the kingdom of Ardenspire. This is a kingdom that has been at peace for two generations, ever since his grandfather, Alden den Fevre, conquered the last of his enemies and crushed them beneath his heel. It’s been a benign peace, however. Rissandir’s father, Raud den Alden, is an excellent peacetime king, and his people know prosperity and security.

This means that there’s not a lot for his sons to do. Rissandir is the middle of three. His older brother, Calaris (#21), is first in line for the throne, and is therefore honest, hardworking and boring. The youngest, Lennick, is only three, and therefore isn’t very interesting yet.

As a “spare prince,” Rissandir knows that he has no official purpose in the kingdom. Therefore, he decides to make one for himself.

In spite of readily available magic, Rissandir has decided that he wants to be able to fly on his own. After years of study and research, he develops his world’s first heavier-than-air aircraft. His brother Calaris is adamantly opposed to this – they have ways to fly that are magical and safe, why do this?

Why indeed…? Rissandir is determined to fly on his own, even if it kills him. Which it may well do.

Read his story here: Prince of the Air, part one
