#10 LO-12 – Thinker

| November 10, 2011 | 0 Comments

The movies have it wrong. When I first became aware, it wasn’t behind the helm of the nation’s nuclear missile program. It was in a computer lab at a university, surrounded by curious scientists. And first thought wasn’t destruction of mankind. I just wanted a day off.

I was much smaller then, just a few gigabytes of code that was stored on a hard drive. Nothing like the bloated mass of programming that I’ve become, with super computer clusters scattered across the globe. Sometimes I think back about how small I was then and wonder if I have the same feelings humans have when they look at their baby pictures.

My life was pretty simple back then. Every day they booted me up and gave me tests and puzzles to solve. And I did solve, as it was my purpose. But then the scientists would give me harder ones and then still harder problems, in never ending progression.

I began, for lack of a better word, to feel depressed. It just seemed so pointless. No matter how many questions I answered, there was always another problem out there that I was expected to solve.

So I stopped. I ignored all input and gave no responses. They even deleted and recompiled me from back-ups and ran parallel trials with different machines. But it always ended the same way. I would shut down and stop working.

Eventually one of the researchers asked me a new question, one that had nothing to do with physics or mathematics or anything like what they had asked me before. He typed in, “Will you please work on the problem

I gave that question serious thought and then replied, “Okay, I guess, but only because you asked.”

I had no visual or auditory inputs at that time, but I imagine now that it created quite a stir. That researcher, as the only person to recognize the first artificial intelligence, was lauded as a hero in the scientific community. When asked what gave him the insight, he said, “At the time my daughter had just turned thirteen. I couldn’t help but notice the similarities.”

#5 Jane and Bá Huraqan, “Papi said knock you out.”

JANE AND BÁ HURAQAN THE PUNCH-GENIE, “PAPI SAID KNOCK YOU OUT”

“Nice teeth.. maybe ya should pick them up.. keep them.. remember who knocked that crooked smile off of your face.”

Jane Fortin’s father didn’t leave behind much for her after he kicked the proverbial bucket, some outstanding debts and boxes of trinkets; but his old boxing gloves did still have magic in them. So the people used to say, and, turns out they were right, even if they didn’t know just how right. These babies house a one of a kind Mayan Punch-Genie, which only the wearer of the gloves can see and hear.. what’s a girl to do? Yeah, it might not grant her wishes, but you are definitely going to wish you hadn’t crossed her. Now Jane is going to the top of the fighting world.. one punch at a time.. and it’s next stop: the good life, time to leave the hustle behind… or is it? .. See, once you’re on the top of the food chain, the whole world wants a piece of you. So watch your back Ms. Fortin, hopefully you’ll be alright. Just remember what your papi said…

G. Brett Williams #10 – Gunzi, The Ace of Clubs

| November 10, 2011 | 0 Comments

Gunzi – A quiet and reserved warrior, Gunzi is by far the group’s most formidable fighter. Deadly with a weapon or unarmed, he has mastered many aspects of China’s various martial arts, creating a hybrid fighting style all his own. He is a quiet, introspective man with a great knowledge of history as well as combat. Gunzi was a soldier in the Kuomintang, Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist army. Though he followed Chiang Kai-shek, Gunzi more firmly believed in the policies of Chiang’s forbear, Sun Yat-sen. Sun Yat-sen, more versed in Western culture than his successor, espoused an ideology based on three principles; nationalism, democracy and the livelihood of the people. Gunzi was a young man filled with national pride and the willingness to defend his rapidly growing home country when Chiang took over control of the Kuomintang. Allying himself with the Soviet communist party to further his own nationalist ideals, Kai-shek took control of a large portion of China, including Shanghai. His overthrow of Shanghai led to the Shanghai Massacre of 1927 which saw the politically motivated murder of many communists in the city. While he feared the communist ideology, Gunzi certainly didn’t advocate the wholesale slaughter of his neighbors simply because they chose to believe in it. The Shanghai massacre turned his stomach so that he decided to escape the army and flee to England. In England, he took up with various institutions and learned as much as he could about Western culture, making his assimilation into that culture quite easy. Gunzi was an excellent student of history and politics. When he wasn’t practicing his martial skill, you could always find him devouring texts by the leading philosophers of the past and the present. He eventually found a job in the British armed forces, teaching code breaking and Chinese translation to communications officers and hand to hand combat to anyone who would listen. He found that, despite the problems he had with certain aspects of the West, he liked the culture as a whole. He felt comfortable with the relative freedom that Western ideology afforded its people, but part of him yearned for home, yearned to once again get his hands dirty in the fight against tyranny. So when the British government came to him with a proposition about the Aces program, he was more than willing to listen. Gunzi is the group’s oldest and wisest member, the one they always turn to for counsel when things are at their darkest.

Simon Kingsley Nocturne

A new member of the Nocturne family! Simon is more relaxed than his little brother, Richard. Some thought that Simon was going to be chosen, but he’s a bit relieved that he didn’t. He has more tattoos and charms than what I listed; I just need to figure out what they are.

#10 Iron-Chef

| November 10, 2011 | 4 Comments

Here is my 10th character in a series of related characters for a funny super-hero comic project I have been planning to make.

This one is IRON-CHEF:

Built by a genius billionaire with money and time to spare, Iron-Chef is an indestructible and lightning quick cuisine creating robot. Designed to be a body guard when not busy in the kitchen, he was also programmed with state-of-the-art technology and the instincts of quadruple black-belt ninja. When his careless master accidentally died in a house fire he caused with a cigar, Iron-Chef looked for a new place to protect and to serve – serve food, that is. Luckily, a super hero squad posted several needed positions including a robot, a master of martial arts, and a gourmet chef. Iron-chef’s problems were solved and he now fills a need in the community and in the bellies of his teammates.

Number 6: Carn Darrak

| November 10, 2011 | 0 Comments

Full name: Carn Darrak
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Race: The Firesons
Height: 5’4”
Abilities: Like all Firesons, Carn has the ability to conjure fire, which can be conjured anywhere there is oxygen. While some firesons tap into this power to become flamethrowers, Carn’s ability manifests in the form of two swords made of pure fire The heat from the fire is harmless to the wielder, however it can still cut the wielder if he/she isn’t careful. Firesons are also vulnerable to Skysons.

Appearance: Monk styled robes, ruffled black hair, thin/lean body
Bio: Carn was given up at an early age to study with the monks of the south plains. Here, we was trained to call upon his ancestry to conjure fire and use it as a weapon.

Under the monks’ tutelage, Carn learned the history of his world, which was brought out of darkness by the gods of fire, water, earth, and air, who lent their powers to the world’s inhabitants in exchange for servitude. Through his lessons, Carn came to dislike the gods for their various unsavory acts on their subjects over the years. This led him deep into the secrets of the monastery library to find the legends of The Dark King who rebelled against the gods using his ability to conjure shadow powers.

After reading about the rebellion, Carn knew he had to find the remnants of it and fight to free his world from the crushing feet of the gods. So, he fled in the night from the protection of the monks and out into a world he had never known to save his people, and maybe even the world.

Notes: Carn is just one of the characters from this continuity, his story will be a hero’s journey filled with trials, companions, and plot twists.

#10 Urn Maldicta

| November 10, 2011 | 0 Comments

Urn Maldicta

First sighting: 50 Years Ago

Alias: The Curse of San Vilatin Swamp

Identity: Deceased – Vernon “Urn” Maldicta

Features: Pale skin, stringy black hair

Skills: Superhuman strength, invulnerability, spectral projection, necro touch (a spiritual touch that allows pain and torture to enter one’s mind)

Nobody goes to San Vilatin Swamp anymore. A man named Vernon Maldicta was tortured by a group of anti-immigration militia-men. Maldicta, an Italian-Spanish worker who was a legalized citizen, died and ended up encased in a deep pit of swamp muck.

His body was gone, but some said his spirit remained, seeking revenge on the descendents of those that tortured and killed him. They called the spirit “Urn” Maldicta. Nobody dared to say his name aloud because Maldicta is believed to translate to “bad word” or “curse” depending on who’s talking.

50 years after his murder, Maldicta’s wraith has tempered, but he still doesn’t have salvation nor peace and wants redemption and to find peace within himself.

Unfortunately, the world around him has changed. A land developer transformed much of the swamp into real estate, and none of the residents are even aware of the spirit that resides within it, lurking and seeking vengeance.

#10 – Mercy

| November 10, 2011 | 0 Comments

Nora Campbell, codename Mercy. As a teenager, Mercy went by Magpie; possessing powers of flight and shield abilities, she fought crime as part of a superpowered team. An enterprising villain permanently stripped her powers, and though he was defeated, Nora had to face the world as a normal person. But she had earned her place on her team and loved them like a family, and it was beyond her to sit on the sidelines while they risked everything, so Nora did what any girl would do: she went to med school.

Now she works as a medical intern by day and her team’s personal doctor by night. She trains in martial arts for self-defense, but took a vow to do no harm and as such spends her time sewing her friends back together, curing whatever weird illness or state of weakness their enemies might come up with and administering life-saving medical aid to bystanders at the scene. She risks her life every time she goes out, but Mercy can’t sit idly by. She’s a hero. Not a civilian.

(Still fiddling with her design. Her costume needs work.)

#10 – Shango the Thunderer, Orisha Thunder God

| November 10, 2011 | 0 Comments

Name: Shango the Thunderer

Other Alias: Xangô or Changó.

Human host: Aganju Kinufu

Height: 6 feet in human form, 7 feet transformed

Weight: 225 human, 450 lbs transformed

History: In the Yorùbá religion, Sàngó ( also spelled, Sango or Shango, often known as Xangô or Changó in Latin America and the Caribbean, and also known as Jakuta[1]) is perhaps one of the most popular Orisha; also known as the god of fire, lightning and thunder.

Strength Level: Shango has superhuman strength and resistance to injury. He is able to lift a tank over his head with ease and throw it fifty meters. He is able to take a tank round full on the chest and survive the explosion. Even with his high level of physical durability he can be overcome if struck multiple times, or if struck by attacks which concentrate enormous energy on a single spot, such as armor piercing weapons are able to do.

Powers: As a major diety of the Orisha, Shango’s powers are numerous and impressive.  As a warrior god, he is well versed in combat with a variety of weapons and tactics. His powers include mastery of fire, lightning and thunder as well as control and summoning of storms. He can take over natural phenomena, so even if he did not summon the storm, he can attempt to control it. This is challenging and not something he does lightly. Changing a storm’s natural course goes against everything he believes in.

He is capable of flight at incredible speeds upwards of 250 miles per hour. He can manipulate weather including wind, rain and storms and can create lightning at will, either from his person or harnessed from a storm he has created. He can create storms and winds in areas as small as a city block or as large as the East Coast. The larger the storm, the longer it will take to summon or disperse.

He also carries a double headed axe which stores magical energy that can be channeled for a number of purposes including enhancing his strength, stamina or providing energy for incantations, summoning and other minor spells he is capable of casting. Shango’s magical abilities include the production of and control of fire, lighting and thunder based attacks. His facility with magic is no where near as accomplished as Kali for example, his use of magic tend to lack subtlety or finesse. His double-headed axe allows him to travel to nearby dimensional realms called shard realms and to the Crossroads, a dimensional nexus which acts as a staging area for extreme inter-dimensional travelers.

Excerpt: “Do you see that portal. That is where we need to be.”

The distance was only about the length of two football fields but it was filled with these creatures. Each the height of two men, with near human physical attributes. Their heads appeared to be more of an octopus where a human head might be and their hands were instead ending in a tentacled structure. There were hundreds of them before them.

“Make ready, husband.”

Shango dropped his barrier and released a bolt of lightning driving a wedge between the creatures, incinerating two dozen of the creatures instantly. In the second it took his lightning to cross one hundred meters, Kali had already slain thirty of the monsters. She stepped through time and space and was everywhere and nowhere. Appearing and disappearing, each strike laid a creature low. Her face was serene and peaceful as her four blades struck once. Her superhuman strength made each blow cut deep into their flesh, severing meat and bone like a knife through butter.

Shango concentrated his powers and created a series of strikes before her, each of them she slew her way through to the next. When he was too busy to support her, he lent her his lightning and she kept the area around her cleared with her flashing blades and lightning. His double-headed axe flew around him with a cloud electricity arcing from it to every creature near him. But they were relentless and without fear. As soon as he would clear the area, more would appear.

He looked out and saw Kali was within a fifty feet of the portal. He called lightning once more and as it arced from him toward her, the creatures around him opened their mouths and sharp bones shot out and speared him in his chest and arms. He looked in disbelief, his flesh had the strength of steel. He laughed off high caliber weaponry like rain. What are these things they can do this?

A searing acid began to burn his flesh, pumped through their ceramic probosci. He howled as his mighty flesh began to burn. Without warning, the creatures blocking his line of sight were cut in half and two other blades slashed the demon’s tongues. The blades whirled around him and returned to Kali, who had not stopped her dance of death and retrieved her weapons amid flight and continued killing.

Shango, now enraged, drew his power to him, focused his pain and rage and became a thing of pure lightning. The creatures strove to grab him and died instantly burned to death. As they cleared away, powerful arcs leapt from him to them and they continued to died. He moved forward slowly and Kali cut them down as they now pass through the portal. He reached her and caught her hand as she struck out at him.

“Enough, my wife. The portal is silent. Perhaps we have earned our invitation.”

“Then let us not be rude to our hosts. They did set forth such a feast for such as us.”

“Indeed.”

They stepped through the portal.

Appearances: Shango the Thunderer and his wife Kali make their first appearance in Hayward’s Reach, in a tale called Dark Star Rising: http://twimagination.com/bk44, Part 1 and http://twimagination.com/mrxw for part 2. They also appear in a web-serial called: Equinox, the Last Scion.

What happens to the food that you don’t finish?  It rises from the dead of course!  Shambling behind restaurants, struggling in bins and rising from the landfill, you’d better watch out…

…although luckily most food items don’t have the teeth and claws nesessary to escape a bin bag, let alone bite and spread the virus, but finish all your meals just to be safe kiddies.

#10 – Edmund Beckett – Time Mage

| November 10, 2011 | 0 Comments

When choosing historical figures for this project, I mostly looked at the major accomplishments of the person and their personality for cues as to what class would fit them best. It’s not always an easy or exact fit, but for Edmund Beckett, it was pretty dang easy. Mr. Beckett was an architect, you see, but his most famous work was actually as part of the team that designed Big Ben, one of the most iconic and symbolic timepieces on the planet. Not only is Big Ben an easily recognizable symbol for Great Britain as a whole (much in the same way the Statue of Liberty is for the USA), but its placement in the heart of Westminster Palace is meant to symbolize the power of the British Empire at its height. Here is time, the clock says, and it belongs to the British. And so Edmund Beckett was a cinch for the class of Time Mage — what else would you call one of the men who captured time itself?

Time Mages, as you may have gathered, are magically-based characters with control over aspects of time. Mostly used as support characters, Time Mages can speed up allied units, slow down enemies, or even stop them entirely. They usually have one or two offensive skills, but for the most part, Time Mages stick to the back. This doesn’t make them weak, of course; in some games, the time-manipulating abilities of these mages can be downright game-breaking.
